Not really. The screensaver is an ad for a book that you may or may not be interested in. You swipe up to turn it on just like non-ad-supported.

There's honestly no difference - I'd argue the ad version is better because I see Andy Weir and Stephen King books I otherwise wouldn't have known about.

The ad-supported Kindles are the least-intrusive ads I've ever encountered, and as said above, it occasionally tells me about books I'm interested in. The ad is just on the screen when not in use. When you start to read, you never see it.

The current version is a good bit better. It's faster, larger, smaller bezels, longer battery, USB-C port, and has a warm (yellowish) light. All of these are nice things.

That said, it's still just a light-up book, at the end of the day.

If you are buying new, you might want the "kids" version, as it includes a cover and no-ads.

And, they had leather cases - new - for $5 for these. Got a bright red one - for loss prevention.
I didn't know about that cover. Recently Forgot/Lost the same on a flight. I even shared the seat number but United airlines couldn't find it.

Contact Amazon and say your kid is using the kindle and some of the ads are inappropriate for his age. They will remove ads for free.

I've done this for 3 kindles and no one denied.

I bought the refurbished 2015 Kindle Paperwhite for 20$ from Woot. The listing said 'Very Good' condition. Looked brand new with no dents or scratches. My daughter and I are loving this.

I called and said I was given one and now I want my kid to have it. Is it possible to remove the ads on it. I was expecting them to say, yes for $10 (which is what the difference between ad and non ad units) but they did it for free. No questions asked.

6.6" in the title is misleading. It's 6" e-ink screen.
The common reference size of eBook reader, phone, laptop, ... is their screen size, not physical size.

The new kindle paprwhite is a much better product. Larger, flat screen and better covers. I strongly recommend waiting for the kids version (no ads, with cover) to go on sale again and skip this one.

As far as I can tell, there is no "Night Mode" on these. Only the newest version offers it. You can still dim the screen but it's not nearly as effective if you have someone trying to sleep next to you. You also don't have the different light temperatures to select from, and the hardware is slower than the newest version.

That said, I sometimes miss my older Paperwhite for it's smaller size. Yes the reading is better now, but it really doesn't fit in my back pocket like this older model. It's almost worth having both.

It's a little small and no option for color, but otherwise, it should work fine for that
