Not really. The screensaver is an ad for a book that you may or may not be interested in. You swipe up to turn it on just like non-ad-supported.

There's honestly no difference - I'd argue the ad version is better because I see Andy Weir and Stephen King books I otherwise wouldn't have known about.

The ad-supported Kindles are the least-intrusive ads I've ever encountered, and as said above, it occasionally tells me about books I'm interested in. The ad is just on the screen when not in use. When you start to read, you never see it.

The current version is a good bit better. It's faster, larger, smaller bezels, longer battery, USB-C port, and has a warm (yellowish) light. All of these are nice things.

That said, it's still just a light-up book, at the end of the day.

If you are buying new, you might want the "kids" version, as it includes a cover and no-ads.

I'd opt for the more portable version but just depends on what they favor.

From what I can glean, this version was referred to by many as a downgrade from the previous model (which is what I have). From what I could tell, the main plus the 2018 had over older models was that it's waterproof, which is only useful if you want to use it in the bath or pool, etc. It apparently has glare, and the lack of glare was the beauty of the older Paperwhites. The latest version apparently had more positive reviews as an improvement on this one. I've been waiting for a deal on the newest version to try it out because I just like playing with gadgets, but really, my old, glare-free paperwhite is still going strong.

You should google it, I bet there are video reviews comparing the 2018 and whatever the current model is that can give you visuals on the difference.

Bought this for $45 from Woot during Prime Day in July. Mine was supposedly ad supported, but the screensaver just shows fancy designs, never seen an ad. I love it. $60 is a decent price.

Got a 2015 refurb for $20 from them a couple of weeks ago. Came in perfect shape - just the thing to have as a backup for when she misplaces her primary one.

I had also purchased refurbished 2015 paper white for $20. It was in mint condition with really good battery. In the past on woot 2018 paperwhite (refurb) was on sale for $29-$39.

And, they had leather cases - new - for $5 for these. Got a bright red one - for loss prevention.
