Look at ebay listings or local listing for the same phone to be able to determine true value of a used device. (that value also increases when there are trade-in offers like this around due to demand for those looking for cheap devices to be able to get maximum trade-in value)
Just because google or someone else is offering for example $300 for a device that is worth ~$80 does not make that device worth $300 in real life.
They are hoping to get lots of actual apple/samsung users converted to pixel devices
I guess they forget there are those like us that will look for a cheap device on ebay/marketplace/mercari or pull an older spare device from a drawer if you are lucky, etc. and trade it in (not a true convert but still a future pixel user).
I got 3 pixel 6a phones (for parents and mother in law) while trading in iphone 7 devices (those iphone 7s are virtually worthless nowadays, except for the trade-in values).
