You'll get charged the full price + taxes when making the order with a trade-in online. When you go in-store to pick up the new phone and trade in your old phone, they'll refund you the difference and with that, your taxes will also be adjusted according to the final price.

Source: I traded in my Pixel 6 for a Pixel 7 a month ago at Best Buy.

Wow, trade in value yesterday for my GS 21 phone was $440...today its $330?! Insane. Guess I'll sell it private party when I am ready... I'd love to switch to the Pixel. I had the first generation and still have it but it has a bad motherboard. I figured it out and contacted them a month before the warranty was up and they would not replace / fix it Frown
