Instead of just saying, hey buy this phone outright and we'll give you this gift card for this much.. But no, they make this as confusing af so carriers still win in the end.

If they have not changed the process for this year, you will get the Walmart gift card emailed to you within 24-48 hours after purchase. I have upgraded this exact way 3 years in a row via Walmart because I have an old grandfathered ATT plan and do not want it changed or touched. This is the probably one of the few retailers besides ATT Corporate stores that can do upgrades or add lines without changing your current plan.

In 2019 I lined up in store and purchased 2 phones in store. It was $350 actual gift cards back then, they were loaded and activated at the time of phone purchase but they said the funds should be available after 4 hours back then.

In 2020 I did 2 lines again but it was only $300 gift cards but via email. The emailed gift cards and PIN codes came in a few hours after the phone purchases.

In 2021 I got smarter. I booked each phone's activation appointment 1 day apart. This time I upgraded 3 lines. The first $300 credit came in within 2 hours of paying for the first phone upgrade. So for the second phone's activation the next day, I used the first phone's gift card and paid down $300. Same with the 3rd phone upgrade the following day as the second phone's gift card email came in shortly same day after they processed the second activation. Therefore I am left with only 1 $300 gift card to spend later. Yes I went there 3 days in a row, lucky it's only 4 miles away and you get to reserve the phone size and color you wanted on their available phones on-hand list.

You DO NOT get monthly billing credits. This way you are never tied up for 3 years because billing credits balance is forfeited if you cancel or port out. The only situation where you may get billing credits is if you did a trade in and received $800 credit or whatever corporate ATT was promoting. But then you are REALLY tied up for 36 months if you wanted the $800 or whatever the ATT trade in promo was offering. The trade in promo billing credit deal is ONLY worth it if you plan on staying with ATT for 3 years AND if they were giving you $800 for an old cracked phone. I have never done this because the trade in promotions always required a plan change for me. Sorry I can not shed any light on this type of deal stacking as I do not want my grandfathered plan changed. Perhaps someone who has traded in as well as received the $300 gift card can share their experience here.

Please note, you ARE required to do the installment plan. There must be some kind of cell carrier kickback commissions for installment plans along with the line upgrade or new line activation commissions to the retailer. The monthly installment amount to be paid is dependent on how much you pay up front during checkout. So if the phone is $1049 and you pay down $849 plus your state's sales tax on the full amount, it will leave you with a $200 balance due, your monthly installments would be $200/36 months = $5.56 per month.

After 2 billing cycles (probably when the cell carrier commissions are paid due to Net60 terms) you can pay off your remaining balance via the ATT website and then cancel and go to another carrier and request the unlock code via their unlocking portal entering your IMEI number and cell phone number and email address. It usually takes a few days for the unlock email with the codes to arrive, a few times it came same day as submission.

For me I pay them off right before the next year's promos and request the unlock, unless I need a phone to be unlocked sooner due to international travel etc, then I would pay off that line ASAP as it may take a few days to process the unlock. Once the installments are paid off, I can quickly upgrade again via Walmart Black Friday promo, wash, rinse and repeat.

So to sum it up, you will receive your $300 gift card via email shortly after the phone purchase and activation. If you want the phone unlocked as soon as possible, do not do trade in billing credits and be tied up for 36 months. Pay down as much as you can at the time of purchase. Pay off the remaining balance after 2 billing cycles and request the unlock. For iPhones you do not have to do anything after requesting the unlock. Once you receive the email that it has been approved, just insert your non-ATT SIM card and it will re-activate the phone via Apple's server and it will be unlocked permanently, it will reboot, and probably automatically do a carrier settings update right after.

Sorry, I don't see an option to trade-in when Walmart page redirect after asking phone, zip etc. I want to trade-in as well along with gift card. Pardon me if it has been answered before.
Trade ins happen with the carrier directly not through Walmart. At least with AT&T you can get the trade in promo even if you buy the phone at Walmart.

This only works if you are on a unlimited plan. It does not work for any old grandfathered plan.

Also for prices Walmart in past had added 50 dollars more than Apple pricing

Quote from lilgophee :
Since this was posted, I wrote down the prices for AT&T phones. There is a misprint regarding the payment options. It's 36 months but there is a link that states 30 months. AT&T is 36 months for sure.

Price when deal posted (256GB)
iPhone 14 Plus = $27.20 per month or $979.20, Apple sells for $999
iPhone 14 Pro = $29.14 per month or $1049.04, Apple sells for $1099
iPhone 14 PM = $31.92 per month or $1149.12, Apple sells for $1199

Price as of 11-19-22
iPhone 14 Plus = $27.75 per month or $999
iPhone 14 Pro = $30.53 per month or $1099
iPhone 14 PM = $33.31 per month or $1199

For AT&T, if you are buying the 14 iPhone as an upgrade, the Walmart ordering system will have you enter your AT&T credentials and you will accept a new 3-year contract.
  • AT&T will charge you the upgrade fee.
  • Walmart ships you the phone.
After you get the phone, make sure you activate it. I believe that is one of the conditions to get the gift card is activation. Takes about 20 days after activation if you buy online.

To sweeten this deal, take your old phone to the AT&T Store Corporate Store for trade-in. You can get up to an $800 credit over 36 months if you trade in a phone they value at $130 or higher. TRADE IN DEAL IS ONLY FOR THE iPHONE 14.

All you have to do is tell them you recently upgraded to the iPhone 14 and did the 3-year contract and here to trade in your old phone. Your trade in is due within 30 days of activation. Once they deem your trade in is okay, ask for a receipt.

I did this deal last year for the iPhone 13.

3/4 years ago I did the same deal on Verizon, I opened a new account at WM and put around 90%, immediately I went to Verizon store and paid rest, next day I closed the Verizon account and I got free unlocked iphone and Verizon refunded activation fees and first month charges. Is this still doable or Verizon closed that loop?

There are good reasons that Android has always dominated iOS in smartphone market share.

Appreciate the explanation on this, does that mean you're locked into a 36 month contract or that you only get the full deal (trade in value) if you stay for 36 months? Hoping to do similar with Verizon but hoping to have an out if needed.
For AT&T, you are locked in for 3 years with the device. You can pay off the device early but the trade in credits will cease. That's how they hook you in with the trade-in promo. From their website:

"You will have an ETF if you have one or two-year service agreement and cancel after 14 days for consumer wireless service or 30 days for business wireless service.
You won't have an ETF if you're on an installment plan or Equipment Installment Plan. You will be responsible for the balance on your installment plan if you cancel."

That is correct. You can even do the trade in online and they will ship you a prepaid envelope.
However, don't do this. You have a valuable iPhone 12 Pro and it's ripe for stealing from their trade in vendor (Hyla Mobile). They don't return phones and they can make up stuff about your phone and you will be stuck in an endless loop with AT&T Customer Service.

My brother traded in a brand new iPhone 7 he got doing some T-mobile deal at Costco. The phone was never used and made the mistake of mailing it in. The vendor said the phone had burn in and the screen had bruises/rash. It was $1000 credit for a Samsung Note. Denied!

We all know the iPhone 7 uses a LCD screen that is not prone to burn in but nice try. Called AT&T highest customer service and they didn't believe someone would trade in a never used phone. Customer service was friendly, but they can't do anything so they transfer you to some miserable troll in the trade in department.

Oh, we can't see anything but I will escalate to Tier 2. They will email you with status. Meaning Hyla Mobile will get back to us. Nothing after doing escalations for 6 months. I took over the case because my brother was going to just write off the $1000 as lesson learned.

I had to call myself to see what he went through. Customer Service to Trade in Troll, then escalate to Hyla mobile. This doesn't work for me because I want an answer ASAP. Repeated the call. Got the same troll. She said, I just told you it will be escalated. I said, this has been going on 6 months. Hung up, called again and went through customer service to get this lady again. Said the same thing. Called back. This time customer service gave me the direct number to trade in department. Called and got troll again. She said, that I need to stop calling. I said, I can do this ALL day. I did it 3 more times and she would pick up the phone and hang up.

Then I filed a complaint with the FCC and detailed the steps taken and how Hyla Mobile is dishonest and works for AT&T but AT&T claims they can only contact someone they hired via email. They don't have phone numbers to Hyla.

Got call from AT&T in 2 days offering to credit the account for $1000.

Please read the Wiki. Resist the temptation for convenience. Trade in at corporate store and get receipt. They may JEDI mind trick you and say it must be mailed in but that is not true. They will also try to play you and claim they "send in the phone anyway" for evaluation. However, you gave them the phone and it was checked out to be fine. From this point on, it's AT&T's problem. If something goes wrong, you can go back to the store. Sometimes, they will also say their printer is out of paper but take a screen print (they won't let you) or they print to another printer.

If I understand this correctly, am I able to pay off the installments early and only be subscribed to 60 days of AT&T service and then unlock the phone? So, would the actual total paid for the phone be for an iPhone 13 Pro Max: Installments ($999) + 2 Months of Cheapest AT&T Unlimited Monthly Service ($100) + Activation Fee ($35) - Walmart GC ($500) = $635. Is this correct or am I missing something?

looking at ATT website, im seeing "Device offers via monthly bill credits or receive an AT&T Promotional Card by mail. Promotional Card can be used towards accessories or to make a bill payment both online and at your local AT&T store.", can you do 2nd part and not be locked for 36 mo?

buy a visa gift card to spend it elsewhere

I am tempted to do this upgrade, bc instead monthly bill credit, they give you a gift card outright. You can pay off balance and not stuck for 36 months. But I am not sure what I am going to do with 500 walmart gc.
