Tried posting this with a link to amazon, but got removed due to SD's stringent rules regarding Amazon 3rd party sellers (LOL, the irony).

Anyhow, posting again since Emporia is a legit company, with their own website selling the charger direct.

There is not an EVSE currently on the market that will do 48a and is also UL listed at the "regular" price for this EVSE (499), and based on the sale pricing, probably not within $100-150 (the tesla made evse for j1772 plugs). Lots of non-UL listed stuff in that ballpark, but based on reddit forum reports, those evses are under-built and potentially dangerous due to poor quality control.

Emopria units are a beast imo.. my default they are limited to 40A, as that's the maximum allowed with the NEMA 14-50 but you can remove the plug to hardwire the unit and use the app to raise the limit to 48A.

If not hard-wired, could this be used as a mobile unit to be used in two locations or it needs a wall fixation?

Yes, if provided a 14-50 receptacle, and are ok with its bulkiness. Weather rating might be lost though if the unit relies on the back being mounted to something to possibly block any openings...

I was asking myself the same question. Considering this works with the Emporia Vue app to monitor charging/usage AND it can charge up to 48A when hardwired, I think this is superior. It's also cheaper.

Not really. The NEMA 14-50 really doesn't work well with constant connecting and disconnecting. I've seen many issues with the portable chargers that come with my employer's EVs where customer's connect and disconnect them. The pin tension of the socket loosens up and the customers get heat and arcing. Ultimately the male cord ends start melting from the heat. If you have two locations, buy a charge unit for each. Keep in mind that these are basically just fancy cords, and the actual "charger" is built into your vehicle.

Thank you very much for your right-to-the-point reply. Very useful and Repped.
Unfortunately, the deal is done. I'll wait for another good deal (Or another brand) and guess the best option is as you say to get 2 and go hard wire on both (Though one of my cars is a Prius Prime plug-in, that has a small battery compared with Tesla - Only 8Kwh I believe - so may go with a 50amp 14/50 NEMA receptacle outlet- Hubble plug in one location and hard wire in the other.

I have one of the Emporia units. The removable plate and box are both made of plastic and there is a gasket around the opening against water intrusion. The design of this is annoying as all of the screws that hold the plate on, screw in from the back, so the unit must be removed from the wall and hang face down in order for you to open up the plate. And there are a lot of screws all around the perimeter, not just the 4 corners. This is the only "problem" I have with the unit so far.

However, regarding the question, I absolutely would not use these as a portable. The box is large and the cables are thick and the J1772 cord is long. It would just not be practical to load this up and put it in your trunk. And I would not trust the strain relief on the cables if they were moving around a lot. There is a strain relief clamp holding each of the cables after they enter the unit, but then each individual wire goes into a screw-down terminal directly on the motherboard. If there is any wiggling from moving the unit around, you would literally be playing with fire.

There are many other portable units that are cheaper than this.

Thanks a lot for the valuable information.
Based on this and the other OP's suggestion, I am putting the mobile unit concept to rest.

Now I need 2 chargers, only if I could see the deal again, as initially, they had it here (I believe it was for $320 on sale). And I was very hopeful this deal will be back or better for President's day but seems not. Also, they had a refurbished unit on site (Not sure if I can trust that) recently for less price but seems that also disappeared...

Maybe I go with Tesla's original Gen 3 wall charger unit that is cheaper than this or another good reviewed one with a good daily price tag. Any alternative suggestion?

Thanks for your kind opinion.

This.
I purchased the Grizzl-E Smart last month and had an electrician hardwire it into a 50A breaker. It worked great for the first week and then I started having issues with it not immediately charging when plugged into my EV. The LED lights would flash blue and cyan repeatedly. I then needed to disconnect a time or two before it finally went from flashing blue to flashing green to signal charging. My car would then say "charging started." That was problem one.

Problem two was that I would check on charging using the manufacturers iOS app for my car as well as the ChargeLab app and both randomly would say not charging a few times. I went out to inspect the Grizzl unit and the light was solid green which signals charging complete even though the car was not at the set limit of 80%. I needed to disconnect and reconnect to start charging again.

Problem 3 is the ChargeLab app and "smart" features are terrible. Might as well just buy the standard version for ~$75 less if someone is dead set on going with a Grizzl-E.

I replaced the 50A breaker with a 60A breaker and changed the Grizzl-E Smart out for the Emporia charger. This thing is nice and the app gives you a LOT MORE data. It worked so well I then added in a Vue to get more granularity into my home energy usage.

I cannot recommend the Grizzl-E Smart.

Amazon still has this unit for the OP price of $399 which is very attractive. Chargepoint, Juicebox and Grizzl-E seem to be most popular chargers out there, but there are other options that are equally and many times, better. I purchased the Autel charger in December for $430 when it was on sale - hard wired, 50A capacity. I self-wired it to a 50A breaker so set it at 40A charging, and my Lucid charges at up to 41 mph. That is plenty fast for my needs
Autel does have an app, but I never use it.

Just be careful that if you try to hardwire it properly and pass inspection its a pain to work with. Specifically lack of a 'hole' on the back to thread wires from the wall. Cutting a hole would void UL.
