Just relocated to central florida's space coast and want to get into surf fishing...
Is the 4000 size my best option? Plan to pair with a 9' - 10' surf rod in the $100 range, e.g., mojo surf)... or should I step up to a spinfisher, etc.?

3000 can't do decent surf. It's the most versatile one but not decent for surf fishing for sure. 4000 is a better bet but it becomes a bit too heavy for light duty stuff.

The 6000 will have more line capacity and most likely a different line retrieval rate (inches per turn). It's also got that big round knob which I like. The 6000 will be larger and heavier for sure. Compare the specs as there could be other differences too.
Thinking bigger is better for surf fishing? Anyone use these for fishing in the ocean?
Not necessarily. In SoCal you can get away with ultra light line surf fishing and use trout gear at times. I would say a 3000-4000 is a good 'all around' surf reel that can crossover for jetty, harbor, inshore and pier. Anything larger would be for targeting *big* fish, rays and/or sharks in the surf or off the pier.
For boats i prefer conventional and baitcasting gear but there are times when spinning gear can be good too. 6000 on a boat would be large for me but this is in the context of fishing SoCal...
