Just stumbled across this while looking for a reel to match with the Okuma Crab Snare Special rod I just ordered:

Penn Pursuit IV 3000 w/ reel cover $39.00 - https://www.walmart.com/ip/PENN-P.../360034727

Penn Pursuit IV 4000 w/ reel cover $39.00 - https://www.walmart.com/ip/PENN-Pursuit-IV-Spinning-Reel-Kit-Size-5000-Includes-Reel-Cover/310967073โ€‹ [walmart.com]

Penn Pursuit IV 5000 w/ reel cover $46.00 - https://www.walmart.com/ip/PENN-Pursuit-IV-Spinning-Reel-Kit-Size-5000-Includes-Reel-Cover/848682974โ€‹ [walmart.com]

Penn Pursuit IV 6000 w/ reel cover $46.00 - https://www.walmart.com/ip/PENN-P.../964373376

Not too bad considering it's the latest version of the Pursuit and includes the Penn reel case (which normally run for $15-20 depending on the size of the reel). I have a couple Spinfishers which are superior but the Pursuits are a good budget/low range option as well. I actually had a Pursuit II but sold it - they used felt drags in that which I wasn't a huge fan of. It was a lighter reel though, compared to my Spinfishers, which was nice. I was hoping they might have the 8000 version but alas, 6000 is the largest and I think that should be OK for crab snaring.

EDIT: you guys have probably seen the other deal on the Pursuit III w/ rod, which I think is a slightly better deal since you get the rod (although limited in lengths... I was looking for 10' or longer) for not much more - https://slickdeals.net/f/16187449-penn-pursuit-iii-combo-fishing-rod-and-reel-combo-various-sizes-from-42-free-shipping
Not sure what all the differences are between the III and IV but seems relatively minor... I think the biggest thing might have been the handle/knob. Not sure what material the Pursuit III handle is. I noticed "sealed" bearings in the Pursuit IV description as well whereas with the Pursuit III, I don't see any mention of the bearings being "sealed".

Thinking bigger is better for surf fishing? Anyone use these for fishing in the ocean?

Not necessarily. In SoCal you can get away with ultra light line surf fishing and use trout gear at times. I would say a 3000-4000 is a good 'all around' surf reel that can crossover for jetty, harbor, inshore and pier. Anything larger would be for targeting *big* fish, rays and/or sharks in the surf or off the pier.

For boats i prefer conventional and baitcasting gear but there are times when spinning gear can be good too. 6000 on a boat would be large for me but this is in the context of fishing SoCal...

I think there are some rod combos circulating around. FWIW: the combos usually don't come in any retail packaging nor do they include reel covers.

I've got the 5000 I picked up on a Walmart combo deal with a Penn rod for $84. Not a fan of the drag on this reel. It seems to auto tighten.

BTW: Just got the 6000 and was checking out the neoprene cover. Unless I got a 'dud' the cover seems pretty small for the 6000 - I have to force it in and even then it doesn't look right. It also doesn't have the cut-out slots for the handle. Not sure what gives but I may try contacting Penn about this to see if that's what this case is supposed to look like...
