Windows 10 and 11 have built in Microsoft Video editor app.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-...9f013d47f6

Start with that to get the hang of cutting and trimming videos, transition effects, adding titles and sound, and exporting to the final video.

The Heavy Hitters of the video editing world simply add more features. (E.g. Not just titles, but 3D titles with star trails.)

....

Beyond that, there's NO POINT PAYING! unless you're being paid to edit for work.

Popular free video editing programs
A. Avid Media Composer First
https://www.avid.com/may-the-first-be-with-you

If you want to become a PAID HOLLYWOOD VIDEO EDITOR, STOP HERE!
Avid Media Composer is used by ALL top films breaking $500 million, so don't even bother starting with anything else.
You want to develop your muscle memory for Avid if working in Hollywood.
(Avid Pro Tools First for sound editing - it's again industry standard. MEDIA COMPOSER + PRO TOOLS know how is Mandatory for Hollywood.)

B. Davinci Resolve
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/...ciresolve/

For anyone doing independent video editing and such, this is the most powerful free software out there and covers an extensive range from video to audio to special effects to colour correction to more.

Nothing else for $100-200 is going to touch this for the overall power and features.

Started off as a color correction program, but after Blackmagic bought the company, it's a free Swiss Army knife for consumers and semi-pros.

C. Hitfilm
https://fxhome.com/product/hitfilm
If you love special effects (E.g. CW The Flash etc shows), this baby will do it.

.....

Now, as an alternative to B above there's
1. Adobe CC or this deal.
Adobe isn't bad, quite powerful, but they split out everything.
E.g. Instead of installing 1 Davinci, you need to install Adobe Audition + After Effects + Premiere.
CC is annoyingly subscription based.
Davinci is 1 time purchase.
This deal is 1 time purchase.

2. Magix Vegas Video
Lighter than Adobe and Davinci, so faster response and interface on slower systems.

...

Vs this deal
1. Cyberlink
2. Corel / Pinnacle

These other companies create video editing software that have similarly been around over a decade and generally packed with features others don't have.

Eg If you need DVD/Bluray burning, these will have them, not Adobe/Davinci/Avid.

Eg features to make it easier for social media bloggers, vertical phone video editing, 3D/360/action camera footage editing, etc.

Depending on your system, they might run better (all have free trials).

....

Each program above will be better at some, worse at some than the others. Just nuances you'll get into later on as an advanced editor. Nothing to think about today.

All of them except Hitfilm have a good, established base of users and have been around decade+ and generally can get all the home user video editing done without too much trouble. Hitfilm is more a special effects niche program imo.

....

#A will get you $$$ paychecks.
https://www.editorsguild.com/Wages-and-Contracts
E.g. Even as an assistant editor on a Hollywood film, $48+/hr pay.

Yes! I'm a professional editor in Hollywood, and I first learned on Premiere for personal projects many years ago (we mostly use Avid Media Composer though). Premiere is still used in a lot of commercial and trailer post production companies. Extremely powerful software that is relatively intuitive for a beginner. Like anything, make sure you watch some tutorials before you get started, but definitely do it! Editing is an amazing art form that will open your mind to so many different ways to tell a story. Go for it!

I would like to try and get into video editing. Nothing over the top. It would be for teaching. And maybe some youtube videos. Is this a good place to start? I know nothing about video editing software besides a google search which can be biased.

I use Adobe Premiere Rush for basic editing like adding titles, subtitles, images, clipping length, adding audio, etc it does basic editing and it's free. Feel free to check it out. I feel like it's pretty easy to use.

Do you have any opinion on Davinci Resolve? Is that another option used commercially? They have a free version which I use for personal projects but I'm wondering if I need to bite the bullet and jump to Adobe. I just really don't like their subscription model.

Honestly I don't know how Da Vinci keeps it free for personal use. Such a powerful tool.
