Did you factor in paying for their subscription for life?
Do you really think you can run these Eufy for life? Moreover, what makes you think Eufy wont start their subscription service in a year or two? Better save as much you can in present. Besides, these are excellent cameras with large batteries.

Can i hook up a travel hard drive, lets say 1TB?
Arlo's Smart hub records to an external drive that is formatted to the FAT32 format. As such the max HDD you can use under FAT32(I prefer a thumb drive) is 2TB. I have not seen Arlo publish a max size that can be used with the VMB5000 base station (may be someone else can chime in).
Note that if the thumb drive gets full, the hub automatically starts recording over the oldest files. Unless the desire is to save a lot of videos, a huge HDD is not really required. But thumb drives are cheap so I would go that route. If you plug in a bigger drive, my expectation would be that only 2TB max would be accessible. Hope this helped. I have been using Arlo since their first Arlo and have generally liked the product.

4K, solar, no monthly sub as recordings are local, home base has 16GB storage plus you can add HDD for up to 16TB! I already have 2k setup by them. Will wait for something like this to go on sale

Have they fixed the issue with this model where you can use the sync button on the camera to remove it from the hub, which then also deletes all videos for that camera from the hub! That was a major security flaw in Eufy 2C!

Eufy was just caught uploading unencrypted footage to their cloud without owners knowing even though it's supposed to be local storage.

So if I use a USB local storage drive do I still need to pay for a subscription?

I got some decent arlo pro ultra 3 camera system for cheap and they have been working well. Yes the subscription are expensive, but that is why I used the local storage and followed instructions on how to setup access from my phone. So far it has been great. I also got the solar panels for them and never needed to charge them once I got the panels in a position to work for summer and winter. The only down side I can see is there is always a delay on when the motion is triggered and when recording happens. I had mine set and always see video starts of the subject in the center of the frame meaning there were motions the camera missed in thr beginning. But this is typical of these wireless security camera system to save batteries. I just wished it captured everything at the price of a little power because I'm solar connected.

I guess you need to consider "total cost of ownership", don't you?

Not a security system. Arlo cameras are easily jammed and knocked off line by thieves.

I have the Arlo Spotlight's (standalone cameras without the smarthub) and while the picture quality on them is great, the battery life is substandard if you don't have perfect WiFi signal. The main thing I would say that would make me not recommend Arlo is that I've had 2 of them die within 14 months (50% of my fleet).
The first one was covered under the 1 year warranty, but I had to pay for shipping. The second one was not...
