Worth it. Plex is great and it's worth supporting the company even if you don't use the extra features.

many features a great though: hardware transcode, skip intro, remote download for trips etc

In 2016 I paid $120 for Lifetime.

I've gotten my money's worth and then some. It's a very well supported platform that has kept up with my growing library, including stellar Dolby Vision and atmos support. I've got live television connected and I've got easy access to all my content no matter where my family travels.

Love plex.

Loved Plex before and got the lifetime pass. It has the best gui of any media mgt software out there.

However, recent upgrades especially shield TV, they have taken away ability to use external player like VLC. Playing 4k movies on shield 2017 is a struggle with the crap ExoPlayer that you are forced to use. It always transcodes and I got tired of trying to figure out the codecs. VLC on the other hand is a beast and plays anything you throw at it in outstanding quality...it's just isn't as clean as Plex.

Hi. So what extra stuff do you get from the paid? Also, people saying they can access stuff when away. Doesn't it stream from your home drive, as in it needs to stay on?

They've been doing this offer for years.

Pass.

Since ad revenue is how the studios and distributors get paid, having a Plex Pass will not remove ads or reduce their frequency.
Ok? There are many other reasons why it's worth the price, especially so if you have a large media library. I have a 30tb library and I don't use Plex for anything outside of that. PlexAmp is also fantastic. But uh oh right, ads….lol

There are ads? I've never seen ads when I stream my stuff. What am I missing here?

I want to consider this to store family pics and vid's since Google Photo now limits to 15gb.

Is this the right package?
Can I just use their free account instead?

Any DIY methods that allow a safe connection to my hard drive connected to a router at home?

It's your chance to send your money to the people who have been ruining the app by replicating every ad supported video platform out there. Have a look at their homepage. Self hosted content is a footnote.
people are downvoting you like its not true, but they probably have one guy working on the legacy stuff and the rest on adding stuff to try and make them money that no one uses, like tidal integration

This is not an offer for cloud storage. You still need to store your media files somewhere, whether that is local or on a cloud service. If you simply want more Google cloud storage they have a few tiers for that, starting pretty cheap.

Anyone know if it's possible to pay with Google play credits using this promotion? When I try to pay with Google play through the app there is no option to enter the promotion.

You'd probably be better off with something like PhotoPrism [photoprism.app] for handling photos. I've never used Plex for photos but that's not really it's main use case and it probably won't work quite as well as something like PhotoPrism that's really designed for it.

Plex is better if you want to see your photos from tv.

Don't do it until Plex can get its priorities straight. I bought this eons ago, but Plex is persistent on giving "enhancements" nobody asked for and nobody wants. Instead, after years of waiting, they still haven't implemented AC-4, which cripples a key feature (OTA DVR) for most of the country - unless you like recording TV with no audio.

Thank you for your reply, but what is "sharing with friends"? Others can use a link to access your home server?
You can set up pretty much as many user accounts as you want on your server and as long as people can actually access the system you are hosting it on they can log on and view the media you allow them to. There are of course a few caveats here:
  1. Technically unless it's audio/video you have all rights to you're going to be breaking the law, at least in the US, since you're streaming media to other people you don't own distribution/broadcast rights to.
  2. Depending on how they're watching videos from your Plex instance it can put quite a strain on your system as well as your internet connection
    • If they're watching on a slow connection on a device with lower resolution than what the video is at Plex will by default try to transcode the video which requires a little bit of CPU power for 1080p but quite a bit more for 4k. So much more in fact that unless you're on a fairly modern, high powered (i7+, r7+, Xeon, TR/Epyc, etc) system it's going to be maxing itself out and still not be able to play the video. There is one exception to this being Intel 8xxx series and up CPU's with Quicksync (anything with an iGPU basically) can, with this Plex Pass, be set up to use that iGPU for hardware transcoding that takes the load off of the CPU and puts it on the iGPU which can handle it easily.
    • If you're on an asymmetrical internet connection with a low upload speed you're likely not going to be able to have too many people watching at once from outside your home network. 2-3 high-quality 1080p streams can pretty well saturate your standard 20-40 Mbps asymmetrical cable upload bandwidth.
