many features a great though: hardware transcode, skip intro, remote download for trips etc
I've gotten my money's worth and then some. It's a very well supported platform that has kept up with my growing library, including stellar Dolby Vision and atmos support. I've got live television connected and I've got easy access to all my content no matter where my family travels.
Love plex.
However, recent upgrades especially shield TV, they have taken away ability to use external player like VLC. Playing 4k movies on shield 2017 is a struggle with the crap ExoPlayer that you are forced to use. It always transcodes and I got tired of trying to figure out the codecs. VLC on the other hand is a beast and plays anything you throw at it in outstanding quality...it's just isn't as clean as Plex.

Plex has monetized everything they can and having to login to some central server to "authenticate" is bs
I prefer to keep my options local, and screw paying a lifetime pass for ads and a bunch of "features" nobody asked for. Transcoding is also free with jellyfin, along with HDR support.. both of which require payment for that to work on plex.. and their hdr support is janky.
I hate authentication with some plex server somewhere. Maybe I'm just paranoid but they could easily see what you have, what you watch, how often, etc. No thanks
Jellyfin is local sign in for how ever many users I want, my media and info stays right with me.
The only pain every now and then is having to update the docker container when the server version is upgraded, but that's only a 15 min process to get a new container spun up.

maybe you should read their tos.
it says they collect device information, ip address, devices used, os and version of device, integrated third party service information, what you're watching and when related to third party content, ip, zip code, etc.
there's a bunch in that page.
you should re read it.
That's not how that works. Your state charges sales tax and companies have to collect it

Their privacy policy is pretty clear. You say COULD. They clearly say WE DON'T. I think I'll trust their assertion over your SPECULATION.
Their TOS section is regarding 3rd party plugins so not relevant to the discuss.
Sure MAYBE ANYONE's software can be spying on you. Have a great day.

Actually they clearly say they DO. They will "try" to generalize your information, but make no mistake they are aware of what you watch/listen to on your PERSONAL media server. That's very easy to match up with their metadata collection practices and they could easily see what you have, obfuscated file names or not. What does "when possible" mean? what are the qualifiers for when it's possible or not possible to "generalize"?
You're one of those rabid plex fanbois who goes up in flames defending their chosen if anyone says anything contrary about it. My original comment wasn't even directed at you, you just took offense to it and had to white knight for them.
This paywall really sucks and you have to do monkeypatching if you're planning to run it on your own local domain (like plex.local, for example etc)
Using jellyfin ever since and never looking back, but it's only for people who are really into self-hosting and open source
I would get frequent crashes, slow/skipping unwatchable transcoding plus odd subtitle and alternate audio track issues (Wrong subs, can't play alternate track) with Jellyfin.
Plex seems to be the most stable, quickest for me and just works reliably. I would get an occasional random crash from Plex Media Server which caused me to try and investigate Jellyfin. But after being disappointed with Jellyfin, I discovered Plex Media Server Service Wrapper [github.com] which fixed my issues with Plex. (PMSSW will automatically restart Plex if it crashes thus insuring 24/7 availability)
I also find that having separate accounts for your video and audio files really helps with Plex performance and speed. Having a huge audio library combined with a massive video collection really slows things down IMO and separating them in different user accounts really helps performance.
As for this deal, I would bite at $50 but $89.99 is bit too much for this cheap basterd to bear. After all, I got into the media hoarding hobby to save money. ( No longer paying cable and media subscriptions).
I understand and respect why some would like to support Plex though and would want the extra features. But since the unpaid version of Plex is working fine for me; I will just tip my Cheap Basterd hat and be on my way without paying for anything
My only issue with Plex is the streaming resolution. If your home upload speed is slow, don't expect to stream 4k when traveling. I tried to share my Plex movies with family, and they didn't really get a good experience. Low resolution bc my upload speed is like 20mbps or less. streaming apps (forks to terrarium) provide a better 1080p and 4k experience.

YMMV but I was able to use the Brazil trick and got it for $73.75. Steps that worked for me (YMMV):
I changed the country to Brazil and applied the FANFRIDAY22 code on the Plex checkout page which brought it down to R$374.99.
- I initially tried paying with my US credit card but Plex rejected the payment since the zipcode didn't match the country (Brazil in this case).
- Next, I used Paypal but Plex rejected it again since my country (US) didn't match Brazil.
- Finally, I connected to Brazil VPN and used the Paypal option again which surprisingly worked. Total came out to $73.75 (including Paypal's ~4.4% international transaction fee)
