Worth it. Plex is great and it's worth supporting the company even if you don't use the extra features.

many features a great though: hardware transcode, skip intro, remote download for trips etc
In 2016 I paid $120 for Lifetime.

I've gotten my money's worth and then some. It's a very well supported platform that has kept up with my growing library, including stellar Dolby Vision and atmos support. I've got live television connected and I've got easy access to all my content no matter where my family travels.

Love plex.
Loved Plex before and got the lifetime pass. It has the best gui of any media mgt software out there.

However, recent upgrades especially shield TV, they have taken away ability to use external player like VLC. Playing 4k movies on shield 2017 is a struggle with the crap ExoPlayer that you are forced to use. It always transcodes and I got tired of trying to figure out the codecs. VLC on the other hand is a beast and plays anything you throw at it in outstanding quality...it's just isn't as clean as Plex.

Yeah.. I hate to sound like one of "those" people, but Jellyfin is the superior option imo.
Plex has monetized everything they can and having to login to some central server to "authenticate" is bs
I prefer to keep my options local, and screw paying a lifetime pass for ads and a bunch of "features" nobody asked for. Transcoding is also free with jellyfin, along with HDR support.. both of which require payment for that to work on plex.. and their hdr support is janky.
Thanks for the info. My main draw is being able to have a local media library without phoning home to a server or having to log in from time to time. It sounds like Plex is getting scammy with all this crap. I was about to pay $90 if it meant it would be standalone without needing a login, but they are doubling down on being dependent on their sustainability, which is meh. I fell for this back in the day with pogoplug which went under and all their hardware was useless at that point. I'll check out Jellyfin. Just curious, is there a certain version of Plex I can hunt down that didn't require phoning home and login credentials?

afaik it's either free which is limited, or paid. There is no inbetween.
I hate authentication with some plex server somewhere. Maybe I'm just paranoid but they could easily see what you have, what you watch, how often, etc. No thanks
Jellyfin is local sign in for how ever many users I want, my media and info stays right with me.
The only pain every now and then is having to update the docker container when the server version is upgraded, but that's only a 15 min process to get a new container spun up.

Don't spread fakenews. Read Plex's privacy policy. They have no knowledge of what you watch or what you have on your server.

I don't think they've changed the requirement of running a dedicated plex "server"?? I'd love to use this rather than Kodi, but I don't want to run a separate server. Plex has a great interface.

Interesting option even though I have Plex, but all I see is a recurring subscription.
The community version is free and self-hosted.

that's why I said they COULD EASILY if they wanted to.. but If you believe they are not interested in your viewing habits/data mining then that's on you.

maybe you should read their tos.
it says they collect device information, ip address, devices used, os and version of device, integrated third party service information, what you're watching and when related to third party content, ip, zip code, etc.
there's a bunch in that page.
you should re read it.

PS - They DO charge sales tax.

That's not how that works. Your state charges sales tax and companies have to collect it

Way to conspiracy theory my friend "COULD EASILY IF THEY WANTED TO". You're comment was intended to discredit and bash. Don't pretend it wasn't by hiding behind COULD.

Their privacy policy is pretty clear. You say COULD. They clearly say WE DON'T. I think I'll trust their assertion over your SPECULATION.

Their TOS section is regarding 3rd party plugins so not relevant to the discuss.

Sure MAYBE ANYONE's software can be spying on you. Have a great day.

Have plaques for a few years now got it when it was on sale at Black Friday for $79. Took a recent trip to Alaska and while on Wi-Fi was able to upload photos and videos to Plex server back home
How did you upload photos & videos? Did you do it through the Plex client?

You can set up pretty much as many user accounts as you want on your server and as long as people can actually access the system you are hosting it on they can log on and view the media you allow them to. There are of course a few caveats here:
  1. Technically unless it's audio/video you have all rights to you're going to be breaking the law, at least in the US, since you're streaming media to other people you don't own distribution/broadcast rights to.
  2. Depending on how they're watching videos from your Plex instance it can put quite a strain on your system as well as your internet connection
    • If they're watching on a slow connection on a device with lower resolution than what the video is at Plex will by default try to transcode the video which requires a little bit of CPU power for 1080p but quite a bit more for 4k. So much more in fact that unless you're on a fairly modern, high powered (i7+, r7+, Xeon, TR/Epyc, etc) system it's going to be maxing itself out and still not be able to play the video. There is one exception to this being Intel 8xxx series and up CPU's with Quicksync (anything with an iGPU basically) can, with this Plex Pass, be set up to use that iGPU for hardware transcoding that takes the load off of the CPU and puts it on the iGPU which can handle it easily.
    • If you're on an asymmetrical internet connection with a low upload speed you're likely not going to be able to have too many people watching at once from outside your home network. 2-3 high-quality 1080p streams can pretty well saturate your standard 20-40 Mbps asymmetrical cable upload bandwidth.
Thanks, what I've been wondering about

Usage Statistics for Personal Content. We may collect usage statistics for Personal Content. This includes information about your interaction with the Services, such as device information, duration, bit rate, media formats, resolution, and media type (music, photos, videos, etc.). Where possible, we will generalize this information to avoid identifying your Personal Content. Usage statistics do not include specific content titles or filenames. We may use information related to your usage to run and improve our Services, to provide, customize, and personalize communications and other content that we deliver or offer to you.

Actually they clearly say they DO. They will "try" to generalize your information, but make no mistake they are aware of what you watch/listen to on your PERSONAL media server. That's very easy to match up with their metadata collection practices and they could easily see what you have, obfuscated file names or not. What does "when possible" mean? what are the qualifiers for when it's possible or not possible to "generalize"?

You're one of those rabid plex fanbois who goes up in flames defending their chosen if anyone says anything contrary about it. My original comment wasn't even directed at you, you just took offense to it and had to white knight for them.

Used plex self-hosted server.

This paywall really sucks and you have to do monkeypatching if you're planning to run it on your own local domain (like plex.local, for example etc)

Using jellyfin ever since and never looking back, but it's only for people who are really into self-hosting and open source
I've tried Jellyfin [jellyfin.org] on all my Firestick 4k clients but found it slower, unstable and had less features than Plex (Unpaid).

I would get frequent crashes, slow/skipping unwatchable transcoding plus odd subtitle and alternate audio track issues (Wrong subs, can't play alternate track) with Jellyfin.

Plex seems to be the most stable, quickest for me and just works reliably. I would get an occasional random crash from Plex Media Server which caused me to try and investigate Jellyfin. But after being disappointed with Jellyfin, I discovered Plex Media Server Service Wrapper [github.com] which fixed my issues with Plex. (PMSSW will automatically restart Plex if it crashes thus insuring 24/7 availability)

I also find that having separate accounts for your video and audio files really helps with Plex performance and speed. Having a huge audio library combined with a massive video collection really slows things down IMO and separating them in different user accounts really helps performance.

As for this deal, I would bite at $50 but $89.99 is bit too much for this cheap basterd to bear. After all, I got into the media hoarding hobby to save money. ( No longer paying cable and media subscriptions).

I understand and respect why some would like to support Plex though and would want the extra features. But since the unpaid version of Plex is working fine for me; I will just tip my Cheap Basterd hat and be on my way without paying for anything laugh out loud

I currently have Plex installed on my FireTV. If I get Plex Pass now, would I be able to uninstall and activate it on AppleTV once I upgrade?
You don't need Plex Pass to use at home on FireTV, etc. I don't know about AppleTV, but I know Android phones and tablets require Plex Pass to use the app. However, you can log into the browser and use Plex on your phone or tablet to watch your content.

My only issue with Plex is the streaming resolution. If your home upload speed is slow, don't expect to stream 4k when traveling. I tried to share my Plex movies with family, and they didn't really get a good experience. Low resolution bc my upload speed is like 20mbps or less. streaming apps (forks to terrarium) provide a better 1080p and 4k experience.

Thanks OP for the post. After using Plex for several years, I finally jumped on this deal and bought the lifetime pass.

YMMV but I was able to use the Brazil trick and got it for $73.75. Steps that worked for me (YMMV):

I changed the country to Brazil and applied the FANFRIDAY22 code on the Plex checkout page which brought it down to R$374.99.

- I initially tried paying with my US credit card but Plex rejected the payment since the zipcode didn't match the country (Brazil in this case).
- Next, I used Paypal but Plex rejected it again since my country (US) didn't match Brazil.
- Finally, I connected to Brazil VPN and used the Paypal option again which surprisingly worked. Total came out to $73.75 (including Paypal's ~4.4% international transaction fee)
