Worth it. Plex is great and it's worth supporting the company even if you don't use the extra features.

many features a great though: hardware transcode, skip intro, remote download for trips etc
In 2016 I paid $120 for Lifetime.

I've gotten my money's worth and then some. It's a very well supported platform that has kept up with my growing library, including stellar Dolby Vision and atmos support. I've got live television connected and I've got easy access to all my content no matter where my family travels.

Love plex.
Loved Plex before and got the lifetime pass. It has the best gui of any media mgt software out there.

However, recent upgrades especially shield TV, they have taken away ability to use external player like VLC. Playing 4k movies on shield 2017 is a struggle with the crap ExoPlayer that you are forced to use. It always transcodes and I got tired of trying to figure out the codecs. VLC on the other hand is a beast and plays anything you throw at it in outstanding quality...it's just isn't as clean as Plex.

Can anyone confirm if intro skip works for downloaded content on a Linux host with a Roku client?
Depends on the content. Host and client don't matter

The praise here does not match the previous deals where people bash plex… https://slickdeals.net/share/iphone_app/fp/721873

Fk Plex.
Go with Jellyfin.

Plex messes with it every 4 to 6 months so you have to redo the metadata and collection groupings again. Metadata sites drop Plex because they make money from them.
Months ago, Plex informed everybody who has an account that they were "hacked" so they advice everyone to change their passwords. Which btw, is a great time to start pushing their livestream channels that has ad$.

Jellyfin is a whole lot better, you dont have to register with them so your info won't get sold/"hacked".
Jellyfin clients can be installed on android, ios, firetv, even roku!
If you know how to figure out your own ip, you can access your own server remotely. That means you dont have to pay anybody to access your own files.
Yeah.. I hate to sound like one of "those" people, but Jellyfin is the superior option imo.
Plex has monetized everything they can and having to login to some central server to "authenticate" is bs
I prefer to keep my options local, and screw paying a lifetime pass for ads and a bunch of "features" nobody asked for. Transcoding is also free with jellyfin, along with HDR support.. both of which require payment for that to work on plex.. and their hdr support is janky.

I would hold off. One the main core paid features is the ability to watch and record live TV. They currently are dragging their feet to support atsc 3.0 which has been out a few years now.
if you're running off a nas you can look into channels dvr/TVE
I've been using it for a couple of years and have no issues with it. you do have to pay yearly for TVE, but if you do a lot of recording it's worth it. I run mine in a docker container and it's nice. Has commercial skip and a bunch of other features I don't use, but I do like that it plops the recording in a folder right there on your machine and you can do whatever you want with it.

Just wanted to confirm, if I buy this pass... does that mean I have access to all movies and shows? Why need peacock, Netflix, etc...
Plex is only a media organization and streaming platform. You have to provide the media (movies, TV shows, etc.).

Essentially it's a personal media manager. You add movies/episodes/music, etc. to a device (computer/NAS, etc.) -- that becomes your server. Then you can access it anyhwere that you have an internet connection via a client app. With Plex Pass, you can even do offline sync (download the media to your device for playback on a train/plane, etc.).

I use it for listening to my music collection while at work, on walks, when driving, etc.

I can also watch movies when I'm at my parents' house.

Plex Pass gives you additional features like DVR and TVE (TV Everywhere). By layering on a TV tuner card, I can stream my TV package that I get through Comcast when I'm out and about.

Pass.

Since ad revenue is how the studios and distributors get paid, having a Plex Pass will not remove ads or reduce their frequency.
The people who love Plex have their own libraries partially because we hate ads. Using Plex I don't see ads.... Ever.

That sounds like you have some bogus transcoding setting. The automatic quality adjustment can be flakey. Shield hooked up to ethernet might help. 2017 shield in via plex handles 4k of even very high quality, HDR, etc without trouble. I also found running the server off better hardware, like a NUC, greatly helped with transcoding speed. DM me if you want some settings screenshots.

I upgraded my 2017 shield to the latest shield pro. Works great with 4k. The old model does not support DV. I wonder if that's the issue for you?
DV ends up looking pink on the older hardware. 4k HDR is no issue

If anyone cares...

I got prorated credit for my remaining Plex Pass duration when I went to upgrade to Plex Pass Lifetime. Nothing substantial, but still nice if you were worried about losing the "value" in your remaining subscription.

PS - They DO charge sales tax.

Why would you buy at full price less than a week before black friday knowing they do black friday deals every year? ConfusedConfusedConfused
