many features a great though: hardware transcode, skip intro, remote download for trips etc
I've gotten my money's worth and then some. It's a very well supported platform that has kept up with my growing library, including stellar Dolby Vision and atmos support. I've got live television connected and I've got easy access to all my content no matter where my family travels.
Love plex.
However, recent upgrades especially shield TV, they have taken away ability to use external player like VLC. Playing 4k movies on shield 2017 is a struggle with the crap ExoPlayer that you are forced to use. It always transcodes and I got tired of trying to figure out the codecs. VLC on the other hand is a beast and plays anything you throw at it in outstanding quality...it's just isn't as clean as Plex.

Side question. Does plex sell or share my data/use with other companies?
Its a way to create a digital library of your own stuff that sits on your own hardware. For ex: Have a movie on a harddisk, that is read on a computer running plex. You can watch the movie via internet on ur phone or tablet.

Plex is more polished and is obviously a larger company. Emby supports AV1. Emby supports AC-4 direct play and transcoding (for the new over-the-air standard in the US). Emby allows live TV to be shared to other users. Emby allows the server to be operated without contact to Emby servers and allows you to manage your own user accounts for the server(s). Plex forces users to sign up on their own website. Plex now has their own streaming service with commercials and they add that to the home screen for all users right above your own content libraries. Their content obscures your own content and you have to go in the options to get rid of it. Users get confused and ask why your movies have commercials now.
I've noticed that Emby support is intent on helping server admins as they are the paying customers, Plex seems like they are focused on the end-users more than the server admins and I get the vibe they see more potential income from their streaming service than from server admins buying Plex Pass. I use both daily.
I emailed them and they were able to reverse out the old TX and let me repurchase 🥳

Oh boy! So exciting, just what I want to pay 90 bucks for!

IMO the most desirable paid premium features for Plex are TV show intro skipping, transcoding and lyric support.
However, you can get free lyric support and audio visualization (Project M [kodi.wiki] is fantastic) by using the Kodi addon Composite [kodi.tv]. This allows you to use Kodi as a frontend to access your Plex Media Server.
Another benefit of the Composite addon is that Kodi utilizes Direct Play better IMO and DTS plus Dolby multi channel audio streams are passed through your receiver more consistently when compared to the official Plex client IMO.

I would get frequent crashes, slow/skipping unwatchable transcoding plus odd subtitle and alternate audio track issues (Wrong subs, can't play alternate track) with Jellyfin.
Plex seems to be the most stable, quickest for me and just works reliably. I would get an occasional random crash from Plex Media Server which caused me to try and investigate Jellyfin. But after being disappointed with Jellyfin, I discovered Plex Media Server Service Wrapper [github.com] which fixed my issues with Plex. (PMSSW will automatically restart Plex if it crashes thus insuring 24/7 availability)
I also find that having separate accounts for your video and audio files really helps with Plex performance and speed. Having a huge audio library combined with a massive video collection really slows things down IMO and separating them in different user accounts really helps performance.
As for this deal, I would bite at $50 but $89.99 is bit too much for this cheap basterd to bear. After all, I got into the media hoarding hobby to save money. ( No longer paying cable and media subscriptions).
I understand and respect why some would like to support Plex though and would want the extra features. But since the unpaid version of Plex is working fine for me; I will just tip my Cheap Basterd hat and be on my way without paying for anything
Regarding your issues with audio and subtitles, you just need to click on the audio and cc icons while playing the video. Tweaking the settings on audio and subs server-side just sets it to default for that media.
Those who are tempted enough to this ShillDeal but have not yet tried Plex,
DON'T buy yet. You're not missing out. This "deal" will happen again. Plex have better competitions now and its not looking good for them. Those who just want to access their own servers doesn't need a Plex subscription to do it. Just use common sense.
