Worth it. Plex is great and it's worth supporting the company even if you don't use the extra features.

many features a great though: hardware transcode, skip intro, remote download for trips etc
In 2016 I paid $120 for Lifetime.

I've gotten my money's worth and then some. It's a very well supported platform that has kept up with my growing library, including stellar Dolby Vision and atmos support. I've got live television connected and I've got easy access to all my content no matter where my family travels.

Love plex.
Loved Plex before and got the lifetime pass. It has the best gui of any media mgt software out there.

However, recent upgrades especially shield TV, they have taken away ability to use external player like VLC. Playing 4k movies on shield 2017 is a struggle with the crap ExoPlayer that you are forced to use. It always transcodes and I got tired of trying to figure out the codecs. VLC on the other hand is a beast and plays anything you throw at it in outstanding quality...it's just isn't as clean as Plex.

What's a cost effective way to host the plex server with reasonable performance? Planning to host just videos with storage less than 500GB with 2 concurrent users max. I currently use an old windows laptop but I think it's draining too much power to be up and running 24x7 and not reliable. Appreciate any suggestions. TIA
A mini-PC like the Beelink Mini S can direct play as many streams as you want and transcode 2-3 4k -> 1080p streams simultaneously on it's iGPU via Quick Sync all while having something like a 3w idle power usage.

Beelink Mini S is $149.99 right now with coupon on Amazon and comes with 8GB RAM, 128GB M2 SSD, open SATA III connection for an additional SATA III SSD, and Windows 11 pre-installed: https://www.amazon.com/Beelink-4-...B0B3DX3DGZ

Throw in a Crucial MX500 512GB ($48) or 1TB ($68) for video storage and you'll have a snappy little Plex box that can do just about anything you'll need for just two people.

So if I get this, this will allow hardware transcoding on my Synology DS920+?
Yes this will allow you to use the iGPU that's part of your DS920+'s CPU for hardware transcoding. From my experience it does take a bit of work to get it correct. I had no luck with either of the official Synology package or the official Plex package for Synology (yes they're different things....). I ended up going with the LinuxServer.io Docker image running via Docker Compose on the command line.

An option is a refub Acer Aspire XC - Desktop Intel Celeron J4125 4GB RAM 256GB NVME for $85. They go in and out of stock constantly from Acer store on ebay. I added another 8GB for $25.

What hardware is being used for that?

I want to consider this to store family pics and vid's since Google Photo now limits to 15gb.

Is this the right package?
Can I just use their free account instead?

Any DIY methods that allow a safe connection to my hard drive connected to a router at home?
Plex removed the ability to sync your photos from your phone or other devices more then a year ago. I used it for the same reason you were looking to use it but i guess not enough people were using it for them to keep it working with new devices.

It's best for videos and music although it has a problem with some h.265 codecs and the latest 4k OTA tv
