Rather get a Kobo Clara Colour for $149 instead. Why does Amazon want these prices then puts ads on a paid device? Makes no sense.

In March 2023, I got the 16gb kids's version of this for $95.99 before tax and after 20% off for a trade-in (starting price was $119.99). Kid's version comes with a free cover and a 2-year worry-free guarantee. It's the same as adult's version with extra crap you can just not turn on if you plan to use it for an adult.

Based on that, the price here is slightly cheaper, but you're not getting the cover and that special warranty of the kid's deal. It's still a pretty decent deal, though if you can get the kid's version for a few bucks more, I'd do that.

And for anyone worried about ads - you don't have 'em on the kids version. There's some special way you have to make sure to set it up so you don't get the ads when you don't plan on using the special kid's settings or whatever it was, I can't recall - you'd have to google an old thread on the kid's version to see what it is. It was something you had to do when you first set it up so you get the perk of no ads even though you're gonna turn off some other thing related to a kid's setting. So I don't have ads on this paperwhite, but on other kindles I have with ads, it's just an ad on the lock screen and it's not a big deal.

The color eink screens makes the contrast ratio for B/W content much lower and takes longer to refresh. I'm not sure having a color screen is worth that if you're primarily using it as an e-reader. Kindle also has a 6.8" screen vs 6" on the Kobo. You can get a no ads experience for $135 before 20% trade in. Just a question of trade offs which one is better for your purposes.

I've been holding an old Kindle for one of these deals. But this seems expensive. Anyone been tracking these prices to know if this is a deal? I feel like $100 before trade-in discount would be a deal, but I've been out of the loop for many years.

Typical sales price is $115 or $110. It hit $100 once last year according to CCC. If you're not in a hurry, by all means wait. For those of us giving this as a mother's day gift, however, I'm not going to sweat the difference.

I love my 11th gen paper white. IMO best bang for buck reader. I don't really care for or want color screens that sacrifice black and white text readability

FYI I got this last BF for $80 from Amazon. ($95+$15 credit).

Thanks. My oasis battery sucks and the lack of USB c is a downer. Now I know what price to target.

Color eink is great for screen sizes above 7 inch at which point it becomes a good candidate for reading colored Manga and western comics (if it is around 10"). Getting a color Clara does not seem like such a good deal considering the contrast tradeoff and the size.

In June of last year the 8gb kids Paperwhite was the deal of the day for 70 off. With trade in I got it for $57.99

You can get them to drop ads if you just call customer service. I have a Kobo Forma. Like how light it is, but the screen is inferior to every Kindle I have owned. Performance moving between books is sluggish.

I've heard good things about the Kobo Libre Color. But it's 200 dollars.

Same. I've gotta say, I've had a kindle with ads for 12+ years and I love the no ads feature. I'll never go back.

Seeing the ads (often for categories I have NO interest in) is a minor annoyance. Seeing the cover art of the book I'm reading is really nice. It just elevates the whole ownership experience.

100% agree seeing the cover art engraved in the screen when screen is off is really nice. People say the ads aren't bad, but they really are ****ing annoying. The last thing I want in my bedroom are advertisements.

What I do is update the kindle via USB-C cable, keep on airplane mode and sideload .mobi books using USB-C cable. Works beautifully.

Advantages:
1. No data sent to Amazon
2. Significantly better battery life on an already excellent bat life.
3. Send my own books via sideloading
4. No internet connection needed in bedrom

Disadvantages:
1. Cannot use wikipedia to lookup words
2. Can't email books to Kindle (though I really hate Amazon's send to kindle service. Doesn't accept mobi but it does accept epub)
