Outstanding value. Respected brand. The display has good resolution for a 17" screen. The SSD hard drive will be lightning fast. This is an excellent processor (21,833 CPU Mark score at https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php).

For the vast majority of people, this is plenty of computer.

Increasing the RAM would be a good optional upgrade.

different price point, but does anyone know if this from HP is a good deal? its going to be 850 on black friday...

the shame of it is, the $450 laptop in OP would probably meet my needs, but i absolutely must have a way to run dual external monitors off of it. which means usb-c displayport or thunderbolt.
This is an option.

Processor in the HP isn't as high in the synthetic benchmark and it's almost twice this price.

Looks good for the work but I can't imagine the screen is any good for media consumption by the standards of this sub, being 45% NTSC and 250 nits brightness
Ah was going to pick it up at the local store until I saw this. Bummer.

Or a garbage screen

ASUS laptops have a motherboard issue. I heard that they refused to fix the issue for free.
I have a Vivobook (Intel 8th Gen) and it does crash and give me black screens a lot. I think it's either a power issue or bad RAM which is soldered on unfortunately.

How are you liking the machine. Is the screen as terrible as mentioned above? Is the screen decent enough for non media work?

I bought it for my dad. The size of the screen is more important. He mainly uses it for web browsing and watching online videos. This computer serves these use cases well. The build quality is good and it's heavy as expected.
I usually buy $1000+ laptop for my own use and this is the first budget computer I bought. So far much better than I expected for this price.

Thanks! I am looking at it for my father-in-law, and it has to be 17" screen, very similar need as yours.
I am debating between this machine and LG Gram 17" which will be on sale for $1000 ($500 off) on Costco in few days. The LG has better screen, lighter, and larger battery, but over 2x in price. While I would have picked the LG for me, for him the differences dont matter a lot.
