If you have a good home theater audio setup, this device is almost a must. Lossless audio is possible here where it isn't on any other streaming specific device (mostly applicable to high quality Blu Ray rips and the like). It does excel at other things though too (I.E. AI up scaling).

Unfortunately, it is expensive and uses older hardware that doesn't fully support all the new stuff. It does well with most things though.

There are some people that find it getting to be buggy, while others still have a great experience after 3 years of ownership.

I personally think this is still too expensive for a device using 3 year old hardware, but I would buy a new version of this. However, I'm not sure if Nvidia will update the hardware again.

If you just want a device that works and you aren't worried about playing high quality Blu Ray rips, this is probably overkill - I'd probably look at the firetv, Roku, ccwgtv, Apple 4k, etc.

They have milked this hardware for to long now. It was the best of the best in 2016 but has been losing it's edge year by year. It has become a pain to reboot every few days after the Google update.

i like my apple tv better it handles 4k HDR from my plex flawlessly.

Cheap streamers and sticks choke on 4k content.

Buggy garbage. Tried one for two months on my Sony a80j. Handled the video much worse than the native apps. I mostly use plex and the Sony tv has no problem with any audio file I throw at it. It's always a direct stream. Maybe it'll work better with other tvs, but I was rebooting this thing 10 times a day. Colors were worse and mouths were out of sync. I expected a lot more after all the hype.

To me, the Shield TV is absolutely worth the price. Some have already said it does more and has more support for all the formats out there. So why is the hardware old and needs to be updated? If it's already beating everything else, what need is there to change at the moment?

I've never experienced any bugs with any apps. I love playing my bluray rips from Kodi. I also noticed the other day when I was messing with Kodi on my son's Android TV that it couldn't play a rip of an HD DVD. The Shield TV had no problem.

What is so cool is the strong opinions and experiences people have with the EXACT same device. The range of opinions is cool, and sounds just like XBOX vs Sony Playstation threads. Which is best Multimedia Player at the moment, or current KING of the HILL? Google, Amazon, Apple, or Nvidia?

Why is Nvidia taking so long to release the next model? Apple, Google, Amazon release models every year or 2, with newer generations coming out with better wifi, bluetooth, processors, features. Even people that LOVE this device are saying this model it is getting OLD for a tech product.

The masses don't rip or download things that require HD audio including me. It is a very specific subset of users as you eluded to. And I'll put my Monitor Audio Gold and Paradigm studio up against anyone's setup. I just don't care about rips, legal or illegal. If I care enough, I'll buy the disc.

It's sad that the Shield is the only premium Google TV device out there. I've got ccgtv's and ts4k's and not an Apple person by any means, but I did just cave to an Apple TV for my living room setup. Haven't had any glitches, pauses or what not on my Channels DVR app since I started using it. I don't care about the polish of apps and what not. I don't care about ads, or at least the big banner one.

It's sad Google came out with a cheaper HD device and not a premium one. They could've come out with a premium one and update the basic to the newer chipset that supports AV1 and such and kept its dismal ram and storage.

Last gen's Apple TV is just premium compared to anything else under $100. Sadly I still need to keep the TS4k or ccgtv connected for when I want to cast or play my local workout stuff since I have zero plans to dive into anything Apple besides the ATV.

I purchased this back in July 2015 (the non-pro version with 2 USB ports and MicroSD). Still going strong.

I looked up my old invoice and it was $180 (and did not come with a separate remote).

I guess with inflation over 7 years the $175 price is relatively cheaper.......

I'd imagine they command a nice profit margin at this point due to the old hardware. And why push when you really have no competition? Even the mecool stuff is still basic chipsets with more ram and storage. But they at least have ports for Ethernet, a normal hdmi cable and so forth.

I have the Gen 2, 2017 model. Is it really worth the update? Really the only problem I'm experiencing is lag and slowness. Apps take forever to open and pause/back/etc takes a couple seconds to react. But if left playing it's fine. I do stream all the major apps and I don't have much complaints. I am wanting to upgrade my Plex so if this can run a server feeding from a NAS then maybe worth the upgrade. Or I might just do a basic windows PC and hook it up to the TV. I just find it hard to justify this price for something that's several years old, especially when I do have one already. If up scaling is significantly better then maybe it's worth it?
