Oh snizzy! I paid $999 earlier this year and it was so worth it to me. I returned my U8G for this and have not regretted it. The black bars of the U8G didn't stay black when a bright object was near it but the black bars of the TCL stay black. I'm trying to convince myself to get another one at this price!
Haven't seen one of these dumb takes in a while. Educate yourself. Don't make us do it. We don't want to have to make you feel bad about yourself.
Damn there's an open box excellent near me for $418. Thanks OP.

Where the hell did all this stock come from? This TV was constantly in and out of stock before these sales and everyone was saying it would be impossible to get one soon. I jumped on the $1k X90k because the R646 wasn't budging from $850 and now its somehow made it down to $600..

Congrats to everyone that had the patience to wait this long, I salute you

Hisense has terrible terrible quality control. You're playing the lottery with their TV's.
Same for TCL though. Anyone buying a new set from any brand should be checking for dead pixels/light bleed/dirty screen etc. If it's bad return it until you get a good set. Annoying if it happens but it does happen.

Well I was in the market for a 77" C2 but I think this will hold us off for those to dip below $2k; happy to finally be in the 120hz/high contrast ratio-lighting zone gang (if it delivers)

I own this TV. Here in my mini-review:
Thanks!

- The remote is bad. For example has no dedicated source/input button. Need to use on-screen menus for that.
Wow, that's annoying. It's such a basic feature.

- The 480p bug listed in the rtings review is long since resolved.
Excellent, I was wondering about that.

Too bad it's the google version. Google absolutely ruined this TV. It's super slow and glitchy. Roku series 6 TCL is fire though.

I would go for the TCL. The U8H is good but not that much better that it's worth $300 extra. The brightness is almost too high and most people have reported having to turn it down anyway. At regular brightness the difference between them is going to be minimal and it's not like U8H doesn't have its own set of issues.

If you do any gaming, the U8H does 4K120Hz at half resolution. Also even though U8H firmware has fixed a lot recent issues it still has posterization problems.

I was in a similar boat as you. Was in the market for a 55". Almost bought the U8H for $600. But then the TCL 5-series was at $200. I know the 5-series doesn't compete with U8H, and the U8H is definitely better; but then it definitely isn't 3x times better. For a secondary TV for the home gym I couldn't justify spending $400 extra. The TCL deals just have been that good this year.
I appreciate the feedback. I am a gamer and would be connecting my RTX 3080 laptop to it at times. My gf and I are looking at potentially two new TVs as we move into a brand-new place in a few weeks. She is a Sony fangirl and wants this one instead Sony - 55" Class BRAVIA XR X90K 4K HDR Full Array LED which is $900. Honestly, there are so many choices right now that it's overwhelming. 120hz and good black levels are my main requirements.

Can anyone comment if this is worth it to buy over the TCL 55 inch 4 series that was recently posted for $200. I haven't opened it and was wondering if it's worth the higher price tag. Thanks in advance.
That was the 5 series.....

His 4 year old TCL is not worth the gas it would take to go pick it up. There are new TVs for $200.
The R615/617 will absolutely obliterate any $200 new TV. shake head

Bought this in a 55" last year for $650 for my Series X. It's a sweet budget TV.

An amazing deal. I upgraded from the 65R617 which was 4 years old and going strong. Ended up upgrading to a 75r646 for $750 in August(negotiated an open box).
The picture quality is Oled good. Where I find this could improve is how snappy it is. It lags.. A lot. Coming from my older roku TV. It also plays horrible with my Vizio soundbar. Half the time it doesn't work and simple operations are delayed for whatever reason for the first few minutes after turning it on. I bought a roku ultra to alleviate the slowness of the Google TV and that seems to be helping. If you can get over this, it's a great set! One of my favorite features is Bluetooth since I can watch TV late at night without disturbing the family.
That's funny I'm contemplating getting this to replace my r617 65 in. I was finding the Roku TV to be pretty slow, especially when loading apps like HBO Max. Does the Google TV on the newer system speed any of this up? Also do you find the picture that much better? I am going to use this with my Xbox series x. But the r617 is really a great TV. I also have a Vizio sound bar the M51A, and it doesn't work well with the r617. It seems like half the time the sound bar doesn't turn on when I turn the TV on. Pretty annoying. Does that happen with the 646?

This TV is much laggier then the r617. But I also turn mine off every night so maybe it's doing updates. I watch it every few days. Picture quality is a little better since it's brighter but I would rate it on par maybe 10-20% better. The r617 had inky blacks as well.

depends, some are saying even with Geek squad warranty, they can basically tell you to go the manufacturer if there's an issue with the TV
That is not true
They will make a warranty claim on your behalf if the Tv is still under warranty and do any labor for replacement parts

It its out of warranty they will handle all of it 100% in the term of the Geek Squad warranty

I'm not quite a TV expert. This deal seems tempting based on the comments, but I just saw this on the side as another popular deal. It's 75" and it's actually $50 less expensive, also TCL.

https://slickdeals.net/f/16196470-tcl-75-4k-smart-roku-tv-529-99-free-shipping?src=rcm_brand

Can anyone coach me a bit as far as why I'd pick this smaller one over that 75" one?

This will be for a bedroom. Lol. Yes, I'm willing to risk my wife laughing at me for a big TV. I'd totally do 75" in the bedroom. We won't watch it a ton, just occasional, but I want at least fairly good quality.

Thoughts?
