These lights are pretty nice but expensive for what they are.

Why are they so Expensive? I could simply build them for $30

Why is every smart lighting thread like this?
Are you going to run a server for your lighting project too, build an app, a cloud based community, use thread technology, integrate with other systems, support homekit, support smarthings, support google home, music responsiveness, touch sensitivity (in the case of other nanoleaf stuff), a windows app that syncs with your screen.
Sure you can do all of that- or you could pay for this and get all of that for free and it will be maintained instead of costing your time to do it. That's what you're paying for. Not LOL ITS A RGB LIGHT TOO MUCH MONEY.

Right, so... why does it need all that again? Most people just want some pretty lights. And most people who need "smart" lighting don't need all these features and could make do with Home Assistant.

It needs all that to be more accessible to more people. It's not affordable to make the version that just you want.

By trying to please everybody, you end up with an overpriced product that's accessible to just about nobody. Of course I'm not the target audience because I don't see the light. And there are people with more dollars than sense who would actually buy this stuff, but they are in the minority, so they do not enjoy the economies of scale.

Yeah can get them (similar) on aliexpre55 for like 90% less. They charge wayyyy too much for such a simple product

Usually when I see something that's overpriced, I just laugh, say they must be high, and move on. It's always weird to me that people comment that they could build it for cheaper. Just build it, Ron Swanson.
