After trying the j8, I've determined that it is also underwhelming. It is not as high-tech as the i8 in that there's only one button (no home button, etc) and if you try to do a maprun+clean outside of the docking station, you have to empty out the bin yourself (ie, taking out the piece out of the robot and emptying it). It defeats the purpose of the self cleaning bin. The i8 did not have this issue. However, I found that the i8 underperformed as well. Neither of these robots are good. I might look at the roborocks based on the positive reviews from everyone on SlickDeals.
Since it comes with extra stuff, and if you buy with your Citi Costco Card you get a 2nd year warranty included (yes purchases after Jan ~20, 2023 won't have that perk).
Personally, I have a dog that just can't figure out how to poop outside (especially at night) and the wife refuses to crate it, so the included "pet promise" is pretty valuable.
To get the same obstacle avoidance from Roborock, you have to goto the S7 MaxV which has the mop (the mop seems frivolous) and is $870 with the emptying base, or $640 without.

On YouTube, Vacuum Wars rated Roomba pretty high. They clean the best due to their double brush (which they are the only manufacturer to have it since they have a patent). I ended up getting a i1+ for $288 (which is supposedly a rebranded i3+ for Walmart but without some linking tech). For that price I'm getting the auto empty, a smartish vacuum. I don't need obstacle avoidance for cords/toys otherwise the j7+ was highly rated. The 2022 Robotic Vacuum Wars has the j7+ combo as the #3 best overall. #1 is the Roborock s7 MaxV Ultra, but we're talking about a MSRP of $1400 vs $1100. The sentiment of SD on Roomba makes it seems like Rooma is a junk and Roborock is a great deal.
Just my 2 cents...

As far as your other comment I'm not sure if you left a part out or something but it should automatically empty every time it goes home regardless if you started it off the base or not (no need to do that if you have a map)

Just buy it at Costco, for the easy returns
Was curious about the irobot because carpet cleaning performance and price.
Would it be a waste of time to even try the j8+ out?
