Okay, so I had bought the i8 and saw that the j8 was on sale. My i8 had this issue with not wanting to connect to my phone even after multiple hard resets. It was time to return it and get the j8.

After trying the j8, I've determined that it is also underwhelming. It is not as high-tech as the i8 in that there's only one button (no home button, etc) and if you try to do a maprun+clean outside of the docking station, you have to empty out the bin yourself (ie, taking out the piece out of the robot and emptying it). It defeats the purpose of the self cleaning bin. The i8 did not have this issue. However, I found that the i8 underperformed as well. Neither of these robots are good. I might look at the roborocks based on the positive reviews from everyone on SlickDeals.

Honestly surprised this has such underwhelming reviews here on SD. Pcmag rates this a 4.5/5 and an editors choice with an emphasis on the unit does great at obstacle avoidance.

Since it comes with extra stuff, and if you buy with your Citi Costco Card you get a 2nd year warranty included (yes purchases after Jan ~20, 2023 won't have that perk).

Personally, I have a dog that just can't figure out how to poop outside (especially at night) and the wife refuses to crate it, so the included "pet promise" is pretty valuable.

To get the same obstacle avoidance from Roborock, you have to goto the S7 MaxV which has the mop (the mop seems frivolous) and is $870 with the emptying base, or $640 without.

I was doing quite a bit of research and at the end decided to check out Vacuum Wars. When I read the posts in slickdeals it's almost like people are shilling for Roborock. A consistent bunch of folks who went from one model to spend quite a bit more on a specific brand.

On YouTube, Vacuum Wars rated Roomba pretty high. They clean the best due to their double brush (which they are the only manufacturer to have it since they have a patent). I ended up getting a i1+ for $288 (which is supposedly a rebranded i3+ for Walmart but without some linking tech). For that price I'm getting the auto empty, a smartish vacuum. I don't need obstacle avoidance for cords/toys otherwise the j7+ was highly rated. The 2022 Robotic Vacuum Wars has the j7+ combo as the #3 best overall. #1 is the Roborock s7 MaxV Ultra, but we're talking about a MSRP of $1400 vs $1100. The sentiment of SD on Roomba makes it seems like Rooma is a junk and Roborock is a great deal.

Just my 2 cents...

I don't know about the Roborocks, but I purchased this iRobot model at Costco earlier in the year and returned it. Couldn't believe I spent $700 on a robot that was constantly not returning to base, not cleaning very well... I've got a few sub $300 models that do better. /shrug

Press the single button once to pause. Press and hold it for 3-4 seconds and it will go home.

As far as your other comment I'm not sure if you left a part out or something but it should automatically empty every time it goes home regardless if you started it off the base or not (no need to do that if you have a map)

Having had two roombas… I'm done with irobot and will be buying a Roborock S7 etc. as slick dealers and other reviewers say that is highly favorsd
if it makes you feel any better i'm sitting here with a two year old roborock s5 that cant charge reliably or get through a cleaning without intervention. I was going to try the roomba as I cant imagine a bigger piece of junk than my roborock

Returned my J8 today at Costco. It would work for a few minutes and stop in the middle of the floor. It's ring thing would blink red and ask me to reboot my app on my phone.

Just buy it at Costco, for the easy returns

Yeah I've been curious about getting the j8+ from Costco especially at this price. Currently testing out the s7 max ultra and it's pretty nice but the mop doesn't raise high enough for my carpets so I still have to take it off to vacuum also wish it detected cables better it kinda just runs them over unless they're all bundled.

Was curious about the irobot because carpet cleaning performance and price.

Would it be a waste of time to even try the j8+ out?
the Roomba j7+ combo should solve your carpet mop problem as the mob raises out of the way for carpets.

Yes the idea is great but I've watched some videos and looked more into it and it seems like a lazy and poor performing mop solution. If they had added a self wash base or some type of scrubbing movement on the mop it would have been on my list

Some of the Roborock comments seem very ... formulaic like they were written by Roborock... I've had the J7+ for 2 months and love it. It does a decent job of cleaning fur from 2 long hair cats and a small dog. My only complaint is battery life. Can't quite get all the main floor in one go, but I might get the j8+ and send the j7 to the smaller 2nd floor. Mine took a couple trips to map everything, but it has never had any navigation problems. The self empty is loud, but it also does a good job of clearing out dirt from the bot. I had a roomba years ago and this is much improved.
