I'm thinking of upgrading the GPU in my son's PC as a gift for the holidays in an attempt to get him into a 4k gaming experience from his current 1080p experience. His PC is currently using a GTX 1080, and $300 is my ideal budget. Would I be asking too much of this card to drive 4k resolution?

imo, yes it would be asking too much. for older games sure it can run 4K alright or even no sweat. but for newer games and especially future games, it's not gonna go so hot. i'd wager this card is about 35-40% faster than a 1080.
if your son mainly plays stuff like minecraft, fortnite, roblox, then yeah this card would manage 4K. but i wouldnt consider it overall worth the upgrade unless the experience on the 1080 is comprised (which i imagine they run pretty fine).

Most of what he is playing that I consider at least somewhat intensive in some way:
Couple of CoDs (World at War, Black Ops III)
WWE 2k22
Elden Ring
Rainbow Six Siege
Apex Legends
Minecraft
There's the occasional Overwatch as well. Everything he runs generally ran fine the last time he was home at 1080p. (He's in college & the machine only gets used when he is home over breaks these days.) I just like to try to stay fairly current because who knows if he wants to play Modern Warfare or some other new game at a high setting.
I wouldn't consider this to be great deal since it's not a huge improvement over the RX 6650 XTs which are around $250. Although there are no mid/lower tier GPUs being released for a few months the 7900 XT and XTX would likely put downward pressure on the stack. I wouldn't be too worried about missing out on this 'sale' as this matches up with the price norms.
