And although it pains me to say it, this movie will be 40 in less than six full years (2028). It was one of my first experiences with really great art style Anime that wasn't Robotech. I saw it for the first time on VHS when I was in college.

It really depends on what you like because if you mean you hate anime because much of it is targeted to young adults and the themes don't speak to you, then fine. But anime is just like regular cinema in my opinion, the only difference being that it is in an animated format. It can have lighthearted comedic themes, it can have serious, dramatic and horror themes and at that point it just depends what genre you generally enjoy watching. When it comes to this movie though I think it is truly great the art is fantastic and the story is interesting and kinda trippy. Imagine a dystopian action thriller with trippy elements. Anyway to answer your question, given the fact that you're on slick deals, say you hate anime, and it's $12 I would say no - wait for $5 or wait for streaming. If you want an entry point into anime this is a good one if you take into account everything I've typed and if it is a genre that sounds interesting to you.

This was one of the earliest Japanese animation movies to be brought over, and it was still a novel artform to the West at that point. Go in with a mindset of not even being aware of "anime."

I believe I still have the VHS bootleg of this, when that drill sergeant or commander whatever dude slaps all 3 of the teens, on the newer version he yelled "Discipline" when slapping each one, but on the original he said something else ! This movie is legendary. This and Ghost in the Shell !!

My first few bootleg Anime movies I bought from a flea market in the early 90's in New Jersey. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Street Fighter anime movie (chun li scene).

It probably won't change your mind. But it certainly is in the argument for best anime ever made. So if you want to give it another try, you could do worse.
Now it isn't perfect and if you go into it looking for things that are not perfect, you will find them. But it is a very well made film regardless, and if you don't hold the fact that so many consider it the best anime of all time against it, Than you probably will be impressed. I'm very picky and apply Sturgeons Law to every form of entertainment and have watched this about a dozen times. Which is my standard for any film I find very well made along with it being my type of entertainment.

Does an anime need to be in 4k? Im assuming nothing was redone on the original film so the upscaling is simply to make this look better on larger TVs??
