just FYI if you have an M1 or M2 Macbook, you're not going to get the 1050 speeds. It'll cap out around 800 or so.

You'll need a Thunderbolt Hard Drive Enclosure and M2 SSD if you're trying to get over 2000 read and write speeds.

Any specific suggestions on hard drives and enclosures that work well together on an M1 Mac? I tried to piece one together myself and let's just say it was a really bad experience. Could not get it to give me any sustained speed. It was as if it was over heating? So I gave up building my own and purchased one of these on a previous slickdeal and though you are correct about the max speed, it's been consistently solid. But would love your suggestion on a 4TB with 2000 read/write speed!

The enclosure is plastic, I'm a bit concerned about the heat effecting the NVMe.

Is this good or overkill for Tesla or any other car storage
The automotive environment is a very tough one. Temperature changes are very hard on electronics, and especially FLASH stoarge (that's why they sell special SD cards for dashcams). If you live in a hot climate, and leave this in the car you can cut the MTBF in half, and you're quite likely to experience thermal throttling. If you live in a climate where there are wide temperature swings day-to-night or day-to-day, you might have some solder joints fail prematurely. If you really need this kind of storage, make sure you back it up frequently, or investigate some ruggedized storage.

If you plan to buy it, read on for my experience. I bought the 1 TB version and it filled up 900GB when I copied only about 200 GB data. When I checked, I found out that the default allocation size on exFAT (that it comes with) is in MBs, so even a 1 kb file is allocated MBs of size. I had to find another drive, copy the data, then reformat it to NTFS and it now has 800 GB left. So, make sure you reformat it before you start using or it will bloat up.

That's an incredible deal relatively speaking. The Extreme Pro is much more performant than the Extreme.

In fact if you buy the Pro version for $350 on WD's site, they will also throw in a free gift, the best option is a 400GB extreme pro micro SD card. Best price I saw for those is about $70 so it's a pretty good add on if you use them.

Just a heads up to Mac users, I don't think any of them support dual-lane usb-c so you won't be able to take advantage of the 2k transfer speeds. It's basically capped at 950 due to hardware limitations from everything I've see online.

Silly question, but is this more for "on the go" traveling, or does it make sense to have for a home desktop?

My m.2 NVME ports are totally full, but I have a couple open SATA Ports. Is this better for home-use than something like the EVO 870 Sata drive?

Also does anyone know what "TBW" these are rated at?
It's 'meant' for on the go. It connects via USB-C connector.

I'm in IT and I don't need ten! What is it that you do?
event photography with 4-8 competition venues running all day 5-6 days a week. we capture 1.5-3 TB a week or more.

sometimes at two simultaneous events at once.

need time for the others to ship back to our editors (sometimes in another state), while we start a new 1-2 events. so we might have 2 drives traveling, 2 returning, and 2 more being used.

that's without any giant shows with 6-10 TB of files.

plus we use a redundant SSD as an import backup. saved our butts when something was accidentally deleted when sorting.

we have 6-7 twos, 3 ones, and a 4. going to replace some 1s with 4s with this deal.

I think something like OneDrive may be cheaper and faster... if you want a hand with some architecting a solution, I'd be happy to help. I've been in IT for > 30 years, I'm an Office 365 trainer. No money necessary, I'd be happy to answer a challenge and make a friend.
