Its a smart house hub that's fully local so no internet required like Samsung Smart Things. This lets you automate things in your house like lights, power outlets, temperature sensors, motion sensors. Pretty much anything that supports zwave or zigbee smart home protocols.

As mentioned the big advantage of this one, its fully local unless you want to use it through the internet you can, and it requires no subscription fees.

It can work as a home alarm. However I wouldn't trust it, I've had mine break and/or freeze out of nowhere. Nothing is better than a hard wired alarm panel. I don't remember of the top of my head if push notifications work over the internet without either extra infrastructure or paid subscription.

Out of all the pre-built hubs, Hubitat is probably the best. However, if you want more advanced features and ease of use nothing gets close to Home Assistant. Which you can get some "pre-built" hubs for.

There is a bit of a learning curve with Hubitat, while rules for automation are pretty good once you have them setup, creating them are a pain, They seem to keep on adding paid features to try and suck you into a subscription.

In conclusion, Hubitat is a good cheap way to get your foot in the door of home automation. If you are really serious about home automation then Home Assistant is what you should be looking at and what many Hubitat owners do migrate to.

To be honest there is not much this cant do, its so versatile it puts a lot of other hubs to shame, and the best part is it can be very easy to operate to extremely complicated for those who want more in depth setups.

It's hard to tell from looking at the phone app (iOS) but is this capable of, say, sending push notifications on door sensor opening? In other words, can this be programmed with additional sensors and a siren etc to act as an unmonitored home security alarm? Thanks.

Edit: I think the reply and link above just answered my question (not sure why it wasn't there before I posted since it's 12 minutes older than my question). Looks like the answer is likely yes, I would be able to write rules to make this function as a home alarm. I'm still curious about phone push notifications but I think I'm in for one. Thanks.

Matter is a completely different protocol. So if you are invested in Z-Wave or Zigbee then yes. That is until they come up with something to bridge them together. For example some hubs have Z-Wave and Zigbee built in. I suspect they'll just add Matter to the list.

People keep talking about Matter, but that is still years away so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on Matter.
