The photo printer usually retails for $699.99. Black Friday prices at other retail stores are $50 more. This has more than the normal cymk inks which you would want to look for in great photo printers.
I was planning to invest in this better unit over the Epson EcoTank ET-3850 on sale right now at Costco for $300. However the ink for this unit costs quite a bit more than for the ET-3850. The biggest difference seems to be that this model includes a grey ink.
Will the ink bottles for the ET-3850 work in this model and then I can just buy a separate grey bottle when needed?

the 8500 uses 552 ink bottles while the 3850 uses 502. I would not use it to avoid damage to the printhead and voiding warranty. The 8500 also uses a pigment black which the 3850 does not. How much printing do you do? If you're not printing a lot of pictures or care about photo quality I would just go with the cheaper option. The inks in general should also last you a while but it does depend on your printing habits. Many people seem to use the 8500 for sublimation printing as well so you can usually find the set of inks at a reduced price from a private seller

Appreciate your response. We do a lot of printing , but never any photos. Will go with the cheaper model to save on long term ink costs
tough decision. at msrp, there is only a $100 difference between 8500 and the 8550. if only costco sold the 8550 at $600.
I would jump on the 8550 if they had it for that price. Unfortunately I've only seen it for $700 during bf sales and I really just love costcos return policy in case something goes wrong

i have a few weeks to decide if i want to buy the 8500 from costco or not. what is making me more likely to get the 8500 rather than the 8550 is the fact that neither of them can print photos that are truly great. they are ultimately outclassed by higher end printers that i could pay to get prints from. with that out of the way, i need to figure out if i should even bother with printing my own photos at all and just settle for the ET-3850 as a jack of all trades printer and is currently going for $300. decisions, decisions, decisions.

I just bought the 8550. After using a few different types of photo paper, it can produce some excellent photos (maybe not to sell as fine art but better than many online photo printing stores). No it's not a pigment based printer, but the colors are very good. If you haven't already, check out Northern Lights website. They made like ~6-8 videos about this printer, evaluating multiple aspects of it. It is VERY paper dependent. I had some old kodak paper, the the picture came out like crap. I bought some Epson premium paper and it was a night and day difference. I hope that helps with people considering it for a photo and general printer.
This or a color laser printer? I don't print a lot of photos at home (usually orders those from Costco photos or Walgreens). I just remember color inkjet printers of the past printing full color pages on regular paper being bubbly and not smooth with all that ink on the page
