If you are asking if hooking this up to a laptop or NUC as an external GPU would be an improvement over integrated graphics for 1440p gaming, then absolutely 100% YES it will be a tremendously noticeable improvement. Especially if you hook the display up to the outputs on the eGPU (the ports on the 1080). It won't be a 1440p monster, but it will be significantly better than integrated graphics at any resolution.

I have an old gtx 1080. Can I dump it in to this enclosure and realize an appreciable benefit to say, 1440p gaming

I tested this with my Vega 56 a while back and the performance using the egpu compared to my desktop was nearly identical. I was pretty amazed that there wasn't a massive performance drop. I got a 3070 recently and I didn't compare the egpu with my computer but I am pretty sure there is minimal performance loss by using this type of device vs having it in a desktop.

Faster cards will be bandwidth limited. I have a 2060 in mine and it's great. I have a Zotac enclosure though.

how did you test this? did you test with GPU benchmark scores or did you test with live games? based on my research a few years ago, you lose performance during gameplay but not with professional workloads

How future proof is this? Will the graphics card interface stay the same

I did both but I didn't really have/know of a way to measure real time gameplay stats so I really have no idea if there was much difference there. As far as I could tell it played just as good using the egpu as playing on my desktop.

basically, eGPU doesn't affect performance when it comes to professional workloads like using photoshop or 3D rendering, but you lose some frames when you're gaming

Can I get a nice portable laptop with i7 gen12 and expect similar results as a gaming laptop? Would it support VR?

Any downsides to be aware of?
