Is this a good first RC Car for a 5 year old? Was thinking about buying one for him for Christmas and was originally looking at a Bronco one at Costco which is similarly priced.

Also, if buying this, would you need anything else for it?

The volcano is a great beginner rc, fast but not going to hurt himself fast. It's an actual hobby grade rc with replaceable parts, it includes 2 batteries, usb charger and remote. You do not need to purchase anything else.
