Shakespeare is medium heavy powered, slab crappie is light. If you're chucking heavy lures, Shakespeare.

Depends on what you are fishing for...

The Alpha combo is Medium Heavy Power, with 6000 size reel and comes with 20lb mono line, probably good for fish sizes of Striped bass.

the crappie even at 8'6" is still a light rod for trout and freshwater bass, with a tiny reel, and prob. comes with a 6lb line

Thanks for the input. I mainly would be going after lake striped bass. They usually run 15-20". I would be shore fishing though so I need to lob it pretty far.

Yea, the Alpha is a surf rod and it is suitable for saltwater fishing or larger freshwater species such as striper, catfish, or carp.

I wouldn't use a light power rod for bass, unless they're all dinks. Medium or med heavy with a 2k or 3k reel. These are as the name suggests, for crappie, and bluegills, perch, and could do well with stocked trout as you suggested.

The Alpha rods are surprisingly good for saltwater and catfish/carp. I have perhaps 30 fishing rods. I still love my 8' Alpha medium that I really love for throwing bait for smaller fish.

I did break the crack the ferrule area on a 10' medium-heavy, but I've thrown a lot of 4-6oz. lead and it was rated for only 3oz so it's totally fair. I just sanded it and wrapped on some fiberglass repair tape, and it's still going as a beater surf/jetty rod.

If you're still wanting to get the 9' Alpha combo, check your local Dick's - they may have them in stock. Mine still has at least 2, though the in-store price is a bit higher at $19.98. It's still a good price as they were originally $49.99.
