These work awesome. Have 2 in my machine shop. Replacement filters are reasonable. You can also get charcoal filters for these to reduce odors. I paid $159ea for these a few years back.

Not noisy for shop or garage use. For a basement, noise is like a window air conditioner. Not super loud but you will know it's running.
These units are not for whole house air filtration, they are for workshops.

I have a 900 square foot shop, and when I was rehabbing it, and specifically requested an HVAC permit, the city wouldn't allow me to connect to my heat pump, as the shop is not permitted to be a habitable space. Of course, later I did it anyway. But I still have one of these shop filter units. The amount of particulate matter created by workshops and even hobbyists can be massive. And it is unhealthy.

How are these for concrete and mortar dust? I've got to do some grinding and cutting in my basement, and interior mortar grinding for tuckpointing.

These are not for that. You should wet grind or get the vacuum attachments . Either way your going to make a huge mess .

Would this help with fumes from UV resin, glues, and other crafting?

Thanks for the deal! I've been waiting on a 3-speed air filter like this.

I was able to get the online chat rep at home depot to price-match this for me - they were happy to do it, but it literally took 37 minutes (and home depot's payment form they email you is sketchy and light on any specifics - like the product, the price, etc). Without any prompting, the CS-rep dropped it to $100 ($110 OTD with tax).
You must have lucked out (or I was unlucky). I was told they only price matched retailers and not manufacturers. I politely debated the topic that the information wasn't on their website and that as a customer, if I'm buying something from the manufacturer, it definitely feels like a retailer. I got the generic "I'll pass the information along!" lol.

Answer is no. I believe stated filter is 0.5 micron. Smoke is 0.2 micron.

Smoke filters are crazy expensive.

What's stopping anyone from purchasing this air filtration system and just replacing the filter with one meant for smoke?

Curious about the same.

As is, no.

But it seems if you upgrade the available filters, the product description does state smoke and stuff.

Capable, but wouldn't know how well until you try.

in for 1. Been looking to get an air purifier for the shop for years. I had a great experience with the Wen spindle sander a few years ago. Hopefully this is as good quality.

From the product manual:

"Do not use the air filter in environments that have poisonous gases, fumes, noxious smoke, or other chemical risks. This filtration system is only designed to filter dust, airborne bacteria, small particles, etc."

Still a good deal, but I wouldn't bother using it for anything other than particulates unless you're willing to spend $100+ on the chance that it might work for something else.

Edit: You know what? Screw it. I'll get one with the activated charcoal filters and try it out anyway.

Started to pick one of these up for my exterior garage but was a little concerned with all the reviews on the Wen site stating that it would just randomly turn on by itself. Anyone have any experience with that?

I have one of these and have never experienced that issue, for what it's worth

Decent unit if you replace all the filters with Wynn filters per tech guys at Wen. The expert name to google on all this, if you care to learn more than ever needed, is Bill Pentz.

I have one in my shop. The only problem I have is it cuts on periodically for no reason. They gave me a refund so I guess it's worth it. It works well, I just have to keep checking to see if it's on daily. Or unplug it if I'm away from home for days at a time.

Yes mine cuts on periodically but they issued me a refund instead of shipping back. I noticed it does it more if you use the timer function fyi.
