I thought the red goes on the red terminal an the black in the black terminal.
Red goes on the red terminal. but the instruction in the owner's manual of many cars is to attach the black cable to a specific ground point. E.g. In a Honda CR-V the ground is on the passenger side of the engine compartment and the battery is on the driver's side.

Yes. And that is why I don't understand why the cables on these things are so short.
I have a different model but the instructions say to put the leads on the red and black terminals of the battery. I think that's what most of these battery pack say.
You don't have the same risk with a jump starter since the power is applied after the cables are connected. The negative on the battery terminal is grounded on the chassis.
