Lowes has the Worx 500-Amp Car Battery Jump Starter on sale for $60. Shipping is free. This is one of the better battery powered jump starters if you are in the market for one.

OVERVIEW
There's nothing better than peace of mind. And we've packed a bunch of it into this Multi-function JumpStarter with LED lights. You'll never have to worry about being stranded due to a dead battery, even in colder climates. And you can be someone else's hero, too, when you notice a motorist with a dead battery of their own. This 12 Volt, 1200mAh Li-polymer battery has enough juice for up to 30 starts of cars and SUVs before it requires its own recharge. With a starting current of 500 PA (Peak Amps), you can jump gas engines of up to 4.0 Liters, and diesels of up to 3.0 Liters. And you'll still have enough left over to keep your mobile devices topped-up. What sets this portable charger apart from the others, though, is its super bright LED lamp with SOS function. So if you're stuck jumping a battery in the middle of the night, you'll still be able to see what you're doing. And if you require additional help, the SOS light helps flag down roadside assistance. Plus, the base of the charger turns into a flashlight if you need to direct a beam in a particular direction. Finally, spark-proof and reverse polarity protection makes this a safer Jump Starter. It's all the power and light you need to get yourself out of a sticky situation.
[REVERSE POLARITY PROTECTION] If the wires are hooked up to the wrong terminals this jump starter will alert you and prevent you from proceeding
[MULTI-FUNCTION LAMP] The 500-lumen LED lamp is 5x brighter than an ordinary flashlight, and features a red and white SOS light to alert assistance vehicles
[USB DEVICE CHARGING] Two USB ports allow the added functionality of charging up your phone, laptop, or any other device that has USB charging capability
[IP54 WATERPROOF] That means if it's raining, or a passing car splashes the charger from the road it will still operate effectively and safely
[DO IT YOURSELF. DO IT BETTER. DO IT WITH WORX.] WORX tools are engineered with cutting-edge technology, and above modern efficiency standards, so you can build a cost-effective tool collection that's designed to last
[MAGNETIC BASE] So you can stick it pretty much anywhere on the car frame. And the base is rubber so it won't damage the paint
[BATTERY INDICATOR] You'll always know how much charge you have left with the prominent battery read out right on the front

Why are the cables so short on these portable jumpstart batteries? The cables are too short to reach between the positive terminal and the (body) ground on many cars. Are these designed to use the negative terminal instead of the ground?

Red goes on the red terminal. but the instruction in the owner's manual of many cars is to attach the black cable to a specific ground point. E.g. In a Honda CR-V the ground is on the passenger side of the engine compartment and the battery is on the driver's side.

the reason you put the black cable on the frame of the vehicle instead of the negative battery terminal is for safety and to help from preventing a short which could do damage to the vehicles electronics.

Yes. And that is why I don't understand why the cables on these things are so short.

possibly do to the amount of current passing thru. a good pair of jumper cables is 6 or 8, but some are cheap 10 gauge.

I have a different model but the instructions say to put the leads on the red and black terminals of the battery. I think that's what most of these battery pack say.

That's only accurate for jumper cables as there is a risk of sparking. For these jump starters, you connect the cable to both battery terminals.

This thing would be perfect if it had USB-C or even micro charging. It uses a USB to DC charger which means you can't lose the cable.

Yes, the reason is a risk of explosion due to hydrogen gases given off by a battery so you want to avoid sparking over the battery. You are supposed to connect the cables in order with the chassis ground connection on the dead battery car last so any sparks are not over the battery.

You don't have the same risk with a jump starter since the power is applied after the cables are connected. The negative on the battery terminal is grounded on the chassis.

I think you slipped a decimal point. The Nexpow is 22,000mah. The Worx spec is 1,200mah making it the lowest energy jump starter I've seen.

I own this own and it works great. 2,600 amps peak, 22,000mah capacity and $55.99.
