16" laptops have made 17.3" obsolete. Lenovo Legion Pro has long given up the 17.3" form factor.
And that single Manufacturer not making 17.3" laptop makes it obsolate? Literally every Company apart from Lenovo, makes 17.3" laptops, whether it is Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, Dell, Alienware or Razer. You may think that but that is not true. May be you need to understand the definiation of obsolete.
And 16" Displays are normally 16:10 in nature, meaning more taller and those are good for productivity. But a tons of people, prefer wideer display for gaming as gives more immersive experience. A 17.3" 16:9 display is still great for gaming as you get more horizontal place than vertical.

I'm guessing Lenovo Legion wants to be the leader of the pack like Apple? Meaning they set the trend and eventually everyone falls in line.

Instead of guessing, try to use common logic to understand the difference between the approch by Windows and Mac.
Not going to happen and you're doing too much guess work. Literally every game now a days, perform and scales better with Wide or Ultrawide display. That's why in Desktop, you even see those super Ultrawide 21:9 display.
Apple never focuses on games and their main target is productivity and general computing and for that 16:10 is a better choice.
In Windows spectrum, you'll see more 16:10 laptops in Productivity and general computing oriented laptops. For gaming, most are still going to be 16:9. There will be some versions like Legion series, Acer Predator 500 SE series, newly launched Dell G16 series etc. which will be like for people who want to use the gaming laptop for other works.

Thanks, but this STILL does not explain why Lenovo, the largest PC manufacturer in the world, would decide to kill their 17.3" gaming line in favor of 16". Obviously they would have thought long and hard about 17.3" and yet made the big step. I'd be curious to know why. Is it because they know most gamers use their laptops far more for productivity and surfing the net than gaming?

Lenovo did not share their market research with me, so can't answer that really. But the thing is they still have 16:9 laptops in their inventoy, for both normal consumer models and Gaming models. But the oppoiste question is also true, why literally every other manufacturers still manufacturing 16:9 aspect laptops and 17.3" laptops? They also do their market research, right?

That's a fair question. Anyway, best judge of who's right is to see what happens in market in 2 to 3 years.
Anyway, from a personal standpoint. I was in the market for 17.3" and wanted nothing less. The 15.6" simply wouldn't suffice. Then for the first time, I set my eyes on a 16". There's something appealing about it. It just feels right in terms of sizing. Not bulky as most 17.3" are with the number keys on the right and generally much larger keyboard base. And they feel bulky.
The 16" feels like you are getting more than the 15.6", yet not being burdened by the 17.3". I'm not easy to be won over when something is stuck in my mind, as was I, with the 17.3". And voila, the 16" changed everything!
