Speed-wise, this one by a wide margin. But anecdotally I've had zero out of about 35 Samsungs go bad on me while I've had 2 out of about 25 of these WDs go bad. So I'm partial to the Samsungs.

Also $374.99 directly from Western Digital, and there's 12% cashback with PayPal (or 11% Capital One or 8% Slickdeals)

EDIT: And can also add free goodies including a 64GB V30 MicroSD or 64GB Flash Drive

I would go with western digital. A lot of people mentioned that the samsung 980 pro has the potential to go bad more frequently. Also with the western digital, you can opt for the 4tb for more storage.

Those speeds are not representative of the performance of these drives in a PCIe 4.0 interface. They can both get much closer to saturating the connection for sequential operations. I don't know the specifics of UserBenchmark's storage drive testing, but they are not reputable source and always need to be interpreted with a huge grain of salt. Also, your comparison was for an SN850, not an SN850X. Here is a better suite of comparisons:

Question, the 35 Samsungs, were they all 980 Pros?

The 980 pro is widely considered to be one of the best and most reliable. This one may be squeak ahead in benchmarks but you wouldn't notice a difference in the real world. For that reason, I'd go Samsung everytime.

Good question. They were a healthy mix of the pros of 980, 970, and 960. Maybe 15 are 980s. And that doesn't include any of the non-pro lines or the other lines of WD NVMe that I've dealt with.

Good link and info. You'll notice that those comparisons track pretty close to the user benchmark comparison. I find your comparison site works better when considering for servers or mass rollouts with consistent use/environment/hardware. But prefer user benchmarks for real-world use cases where you'll see people on a huge variety of hardware, weather environment, and varied usage. Ranging from a cheap laptop to high end gaming PC to game consoles to business class, and everything in between. Obviously many folks running those tests aren't using hardware that fully utilizes the capabilities, but that tends to balance out.

You'll want to add a heatsink yourself, or buy one with a heatsink.

Western Digital's page [westerndigital.com] lists the product number as "WDBBKW0020BBK-WRSN" for the non-X (850).

Adorams's page lists the one with heatsink ($180) [adorama.com] as a slightly different number "WDBB9H0020BNC-WRSN".
