How good is that ratio in today's market?

I bought a couple of X300 earlier generation 5TB drives on Black Friday 2018, and with heavy daily use they are still going strong. With a 4.5 Amazon rating from almost a thousand reviewers, I'd say they're as good as a Hitachi, WD or Seagate.

Have a older Gen and this one and both 8tbs have been running great.

Also this drive has been this price since prime day so I'm not sure if it's permanent or just they are keeping it on sale for the holidays but it's a good price.

toshiba seems to last a lot longer than WD. if i had to pick between the two, i would always pick Toshiba. still have an old IDE 500gb hd, and sata 2tb running strong.

IIRC when WD bought HGST they had to sell some of HGST's capacity and tech to Toshiba in order to pass antitrust muster. I haven't used them but suspect these drives are broadly similar to HGST's Deskstar NAS/WD Red drives.
ED: There appears to be a separate Toshiba NAS lineup, so these may be more suitable for lighter use cases. Might be a good idea to check what eg backblaze has to say about them.

I don't think they are. Having used a Toshiba X300, it's nothing like any WD (or WD branded Hitachi) that I've ever used. That said, my only complaint about the X300 is that it's very loud (and does not support AAM).

I stand corrected then, it may have only been a capacity play. It may be that their NAS drives—which I just noticed, this isn't, and editted my OP accordingly—behave differently. Between your noise complaints and the fact that this isn't a NAS drive, it may be that the WD is the better buy, depending on the use case.
