Actually, that information is irrelevant.

If your purpose is to install Linux and Linux only, you can simply wipe out the entire SSD and install Linux.

If your purpose is to install Linux and Windows dual boot, you'll have to figure out how to do that anyway as bitlocker is enabled on pretty much all new Windows laptop already.

After all, this is a pretty standard laptop. The hardware itself has nothing to do with "preventing Linux installation because of bitlocker". The moment you wipe out the pre-installed windows, that problem is already gone.

I bought this last year for $400. It is decent. The specs say it has ethernet, but that is incorrect, which is clear if you look at the photos - no ethernet port.

It has 2 sodimm slots. I added a 16gb stick, bring the memory up to 24gb.

This particular i3 is the 4-core, 8-thread version.

I think this is a great deal. Usually the HP 17" laptops in this price range don't have the *much* better 1080p IPS screen.

Its says normally $599. BB always has the i5 version on sale for mid $500s. That being said, if I wanted a 17" and all I needed it for was basic tasks(youtube, web, ect) it's a pretty good deal.
If I knew someone who paid $599 for it, I'd punch him, though

I checked it out at Staples and it was meh. The screen had bleeding feel to it. You get what you paid for. $100 more they also had I think it was Acer on sale which was much better.

17 inch? Too big and heavy to carry around. This should be treated as a desktop replacement.

As mentioned by post above, NO.

You can buy a USB ethernet adapter if you need.

My elderly mother told me she wanted a "big screen laptop" for web browsing. This should do the trick.

Note that is not just an i5 step up, it is also 12th gen vs 11 on the i3. I am guessing it is the same screen though did not see IPS mentioned.

It's probably called Windows Device Encryption and not BitLocker. BitLocker is a Pro/Enterprise feature not available on Windows Home.
