Caveats: This is estimated to ship in mid-Jan, and note HP's 15% restocking fee.
This is a well-built, top-of-the-line enterprise-class PC, comparable to ThinkPad T series or Dell Latitude 7000/9000. I have the earlier G8 model and it's superb. Features:
Ryzen 7 6800U processor (other options available)
16:10 aspect ratio 1920 x 1200 display with 400 nits, non-touch (other options available)
16GB DDR5 RAM in (2 SODIMM slots; choose 1x8GB or 1x16GB if you want to replace with your own)
512 GB PCIe-4x4 NVMe TLC SSD (other options available, choose 256 GB if you want to replace with your own)
5 MP webcam with IR facial recognition for Windows Hello
FreeDOS (Windows 10 or 11 Pro costs about $68 more)
Backlit keyboard (make sure to choose this!)
Fingerprint reader (again, make sure to select it)
Ports: HDMI, 2x USB-A, 2x USB-C with Power Delivery and DisplayPort
Weight: Starting at 3.09 lb
Other notes re: configuration:
- Processor: You can save some money with the 6600U, which has more than enough performance for most. But for personal use, no point in spending extra for the "Pro" processors like the 6650U or 6850U.
- Storage: The PCIe 4 drives don't cost more, so make sure to choose one of those. I'd probably go with the 256GB option, since you can get a 500GB drive right now for $45 (Western Digital SN770) that will probably be faster than whatever HP gives you.
- Make sure to choose the No Tamper Lock option, unless you know you want this. Google for more.
- Displays: Yes it's matte. Avoid the 1000-nit Sure View privacy screen option, again unless you know you want that. The Sure View has some big disadvantages even when it's turned off.
- For power adapter, I recommend the 65W slim. 45W will charge slowly or not at all when computer is at load.
- The default wifi adapter is Realtek, which is crap, or you can spend a few dollars more for Qualcomm, which I recommend you do if you don't want to mess with replacing it (not hard). I always replace with Intel (recommend AX200 or AX210, available for around $15 on eBay). However, I recommend not choosing the "no wifi" option, as it's possible antennae are not included in that case.
HP does have PayPal check out for those of you with Chase Freedom (5X points in Q4), but I believe (not 100%) sure that HP charges at time of shipping, not ordering, so if this ships in January you would not get the points.
Also, check around for ca$h bakc, I'm seeing 10%. :-)
Tip if you mainly use this plugged in: There's a BIOS setting that limits charging to 80% (something like "HP Battery Manager / Optimize for battery health"), which will greatly slow the aging of the battery. Keeping a battery at 100% for extended periods greatly accelerates permanent loss of capacity. Windows will still report the battery as charging to 100%, it's the firmware that is locking out 20% of the capacity. (Unfortunately, HP does not offer fine-grained control over charging thresholds, the way Dell and Lenovo do.)
I purchased this customized laptop for about 900 a week ago, with a ship date in January. To my surprise, I checked yesterday and it has already been built and shipped from China, it's currently in Alaska and expected to be delivered to me in a couple days.
I chose almost the same exact config except I went with the cheapest ram and cheapest ssd since I plan to replace them immediately.
I also went with the "no wifi" option with plans of installing AX200, but then earlier this week I learned about how the antenna's are built into the laptop screen, and I couldn't find any info on whether or not mine will be missing the antenna, so I decided to wait it out and see.
I already purchased the replacement ssd and ram. I have done extensive research on wifi adapters recently and settled on the AX200 because it seems like a good option for when I install Debian. I did not anticipate that it would be this difficult to buy: Amazon only has it from 3rd party sellers (no thanks), bestbuy/walmart don't have it, the nearest microcenter to me is 4 hours away (they won't ship it). For such a critical piece of networking hardware, I can't get myself to trust 3rd party sellers on Amazon or eBay. I need a reliable merchant.
I'll post again in a couple days when I receive it and let you guys know whether the antenna is included or not. I guess I'll return and re-purchase if it's not.

I don't have the G9, but my 845 G8 has an excellent keyboard, not as good as old-school ThinkPad keyboards but better than almost all newer laptops, incl. the newer lower-travel ThinkPad keyboards. It's a bit more clicky than the old ThinkPads.

Play with the customizations! Everything is heavily discounted, including the accessories (docks and all (apparently HP docks are unreliable)), but the discount only shows in the total.
There is an option for a touchscreen display but it's only 250 nits. There are other non-touch displays up to 1000 nits.
I selected FreeDOS, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SSD because it's cheaper to upgrade these separately.
It's also worth noting this has 2x USB4 Type-C 40Gbps, great for running multiple hi-res displays! Many other AMD laptops might only be 10Gbps or 20Gbps.
