I've checked the region in the Microsoft account it shows United States, checked my IP address, registers as my unmasked one, everything seems fine. Any helpful solutions? It was 100% expired for about 3 months.

The main difference is the cost. Someone with an expired sub can use the Xbox Live Gold --> GPU upgrade process to save a ton of money. People with existing GPU subs always pay more to extend their time.
Imagine for a minute that no vpn is being used, and that you have moved from the usa to South Africa, should microsoft allow you to use your xbox in South Africa now that you live there? Of course. That's why vpn shenanigans work in the first place and why they can't really stop you.
