TBH 500MB/sec is still fast enough for 99% of people. At 1000 MB/sec, moving 170GB (my last export) takes ~3 minutes. At 500 MB/sec, it instead takes ~6 minutes.

Even if you move the whole 1TB, we're talking about the difference of ~15 minutes.

I'm not important enough that 15 mins is worth $30, especially when I can just leave it and do something else
This is ok for storage purposes. Just keep in mind that this only goes up to ~500MB/sec as opposed to 1000MB/sec in the newer ones if you care about speed.

In some cases it may even be better to just buy a cheap 1TB NVME stick and an enclosure instead.

Would this be a good external drive for gaming? My kids laptop is out of space
It would work, but USB is flawed in that it is a polling-based protocol.

That means transferring data uses CPU.

It would work fine just you might notice some stuttering when it's loading a new part of the map.

The best method would be some sort of Thunderbolt NVME enclosure, if such a thing exists (never researched it) and your laptop supported Thunderbolt.

And how reliable are these kind of HDDs? I wanted to switch the least year with one of these guys, but I still have some resistance to the change from mechanical drives to big SSD, this because I still have 10+ years mechanical drives who are rock solid when I plug them again to browse old photo/video backups, and I had some bad experiences with these kind of SSD drives.

these little guys are just nvme and m.2 drives inside an encloser. the faster version has a nvme drive while this one is just a sata drive I belive. ssd's have come a long way nad have some crazy write lifes for an average user. But self life I can not comment on as ssds have not really been amazing long enough for me to have one on a self for 10+ years to test that kind of thing.

Sorry noob question here. How is this for clearing up phone storage ? Can i just plug it in and itll act as a memory card when inserted ? Then just transfer stuff over? Or do i need a computer to transfer?

Or should i get one of those nvme? I understand that theyre faster or will it be an overkill for my use? Thanks guys
