It's not junk depending on what you need. For us Turbotax deluxe* is very easy to use with our particular Schedule C business and easily imports our brokerage account information. I tried H&R block one year and I could not get it to properly calculate our business tax credits even after opening a support ticket.
Also - an FYI for those that used TaxAct, H&R Block or TaxSlayer online services in previous years: There is a good chance they secretly sent data about you to Meta\Facebook: https://arstechnica.com/tech-poli...with-meta/
*In previous years there were some abilities you'd get with the physical disk that weren't included in the download copy. I haven't looked this year to see if that is still the case or not
Cause Intuit, maker of TurboTax, and other tax prep software companies have paid off Congress to make sure they don't allow this to happen. It's been contemplated for years and years.
Will Deluxe allow a user to log into their brokerage account and download/import the 1099 info, like Premier can do? I have seen wildly different answers in the past.

Does Deluxe provide the same direct download from brokerages that Premier does? That's the key thing I need. Premier was always sold as "better for investments". If the brokerage d/l is the same, how is Premier better for Investments? Does Intuit mean "Real Estate Investments"?
Each year, Americans pay billions of dollars to Intuit, the corporate owner of TurboTax, to help them navigate the byzantine nightmare of filing a tax return. And each year, Intuit reinvests a small sliver of that revenue into political contributions and lobbying efforts to keep taxes pointlessly complicated.
if the IRS knows how much I owe, why not just send me a bill?
How does the IRS know? They have no clue what I owe, especially now requiring 1099 for everyone who sent $600 or more. They honestly just take your word for it and maybe audit you later

You do know that the IRS receives the 1099s right? So they do know for the average Joe.

I use https://www.freetaxusa.com/ and it ask for everything pretty clearly. Used it for a couple years after credit karma went to a new company with no problems.
I used taxact and so you have a point in that I didn't try every single free file option so I can only speak to my experience. I'm sure they ask for stuff clearly but they don't really go out of its way to make things easier/maximize your refund
Most developed countries do not burden their constituents with 'doing' taxes, they send you an estimate and then you can dispute it if you think they got it wrong.

I use deluxe every year to automatically import from my brokerage. You do not need premier. Premier offers extra stock/investment guidance which most people most likely have no use for

Price increase of $6 could be a general/inflation related increase. But I'm holding off until end of December sale.
