    But at $400 it almost makes sense to jump to the the dw735 for any extra $150

    Very much agree. Some things to note, this is a *spiral* cutterhead and not the tremendously superior *helical* cutterhead. These are also HSS instead of a carbide blade. This are also 2-sided vs. most that are 4 sided blades. A big thing to keep in mind is there are 26 blades on this spiral vs. most helical that have significantly more.

    Just doing some math - this has 26 cutters x 14.25 mm per cutter face = 370mm of cutting per rotation. That's less than 15 inches for a 13 inch planer. Putting that in perspective, a dual blade planer is going to have 26 inches of cutting per rotation of the cutterhead; then consider a 3 blade cutter...

    I'm not saying this isn't a good entry level option, just folks need to keep in mind this isn't the high-end helix cutters youtubers rave about.

    Home Depot also has the discount. I got Lowes to price match and used my Lowes card for another 5% off. I ended up paying 377 before taxes with free shipping.

    Helical head cutters aren't something that is neccesary. They can actually have *worse* performance than straight blades if things aren't adjusted right. The best thing about them is they are sorta modular, if one insert is damaged you can replace it without doing the whole knives. And each insert is essentially 4-in-1 so you will rarely have to buy new inserts, you just rotate them.

    But a properly setup helical head will be theoretically better than a straight blade. However I just don't see a point at the $400 price. I'd rather get a higher quality planer that is more stable and has less snipe.

    But if you're buying a big boy 24" planer, definitely think about splurging on the helical head.

    For anyone that has never ownwd or used a thickness planer before, it's better to start with a spiral/helical cutter head if you can afford to do so, and save yourself the trouble of having to upgrade later for several hundred dollars. I'd trade my Rigid 3 knife planer + cash for this Wen spiral planer in a heartbeat.

    I have this. Planed around 250 board feet of walnut so far. Had it about a year.

    I'd make the same decision again.

    It has held up well. I chose this over the bigger dewalt. I have a small shop and the planer sits on a low shelf most of the time. When I do need it, I can lift it myself and get it up to the bench. The dewalt 735 is about 92 lbs and this is 63. It makes a difference if you're in a small shop sharing bench space. I also didn't like my odds with free shipping of over 100lbs.

    The replacement cutter heads are slightly bigger than the cheapest carbides you can buy. They're also 2 sided vs 4. I'm on mobile but I want to say these are 10.5mm vs 10mm. Oh well. (Ps watch your knuckles when changing planer blades Smilie )

    I'm in MO, and managed to get it through wenproducts.com without sales tax and with free shipping from CA. Ended up being a better deal around this time last year.

    Edit: grizzly and rikon have similar versions of this that have some more reviews to consider. Also check those!
