He -perhaps because he is a 5yo - could not get used to the twist shift 6 speed, so I've swapped it to a trigger shift 7 speed (could not find the 6 speed in a price that made sense) and a megarange 7 speed freewheel (was like $35 total).OEM shimano RD works fine on the new setup.
Otherwise the bike does good. You need to run low pressure to make the most of the grip...it is 2.6in tires for a 45-50lb rider after all...we are talking low teens in PSI, even with tubes.
Only upgrade I think is needed, are pedals...those are included are the typ. stamp steel cheap pedals that are pretty slippery. looking at some plastic MTB pedals.
Good quality bike, especially discounted.

I had a tourney derailer on a half bike that literally fell apart going down the road.
Replaced it with a used STX from a used bike shop for about $5.
The Altus m315 trigger shifter work great, and cost less than $20 new.

Do you have a link to the trigger shift? my daughter doesnt love the grip shift on her bike.
