Alright everyone. Tell me why I should buy this (Google assistant) over an Alexa equivalent or why I should buy an Alexa equivalent over this (or Google assistant in general)

This vs Alexa:
  • Google AI tech is actually much better than Amazon's - at least in my case, it understands me better, gives better answers.
  • Alexa devices (Echo Show specifically) keep forcing new "features" (read, pitches) down my throat constantly, cluttering the screen with useless crap (just last week - "Alexa games"). This is a gross violation of Amazon's own principle (respecting the client).
This vs Nest Hub 5:
  • Better form factor as a nightstand alarm clock
  • Nest Hub is bigger and nicer screen, could be used for casting and showing video.
  • In the past, Lenovo clocks were somewhat funky, like they changed the MAC address regularly, confusing the hell out of smart routers.

Changing Mac address on its own? Lol that's crazy. Yeah I'm leaning towards Google because I have a couple minis already and chromecast but the Alexa devices seem like they have a lot more models and accessories plus it's annoying saying ok or hey Google vs just saying Alexa but I'm leaning towards getting a nest doorbell as well. How is the nest hub 7 inch 2nd gen?

You're asking the wrong question, what you need to be asking will this work with Alexa devices. Most devices that you buy switches TVs etc work with Alexa and with Google. Just because you buy the smart clock doesn't mean that you can't have an Alexa hockey puck somewhere else in the house. They both will control the device is similar and at the same time.

A year ago I would have said Alexa 100% but it has gone to complete shit in the interim. Firing half the Alexa group isn't going to fix it. I'm rapidly transitioning to Google home for everything.

Can confirm Alexa has been having 'problems' lately. The new CEO isn't invested in the Alexa ecosystem as they have been a money loss for some time. Sadly Alexa is so much better at routines. Perhaps Google will step up and do more.

Does this allow for video to be played? Can I ask it to play a YouTube channel?

Will this pop up the feed for my google/nest doorbell when it rings? Finding mixed answers online but sounds mostly like a no,l in which case would rather spend the extra 20$ on the hub…

I'm wondering the same. The previous generation had bad problems with the display dimming
