Most commonly is roundover bits for knocking down the edge of anything you're working on, or creating mouldings, flush trimming laminate, and other small wood shaping tasks.
I'm tempted because I'm about to retrim the whole house, but we already have an entry level router table that I can use.
I'm sorta a DIY noob… what are the applications of this tool? I am in the Ryobi line and expanding

Time to head to the store to get a price adjustment. Bought this router two weeks ago for $79 ($71 after 10 off 100 coupon). This is so much better than the old P601. Most importantly it has a variable speed so you can safely use larger bits.

Can this be used like a more traditional larger router to creat straight grooves in wood for mounting shelves and sliding doors? Or is it too weak for that sort of job?

In softer wood should be no problem... Hard wood might struggle a bit but will do the job if you do it at a slower pace.
To be noted, this router only takes 1/4 inch bits. If you (like me) just bought the $10 Amazon Black Friday deal of 12 Kowood bits, they won't fit in this router.
They have generic ones on Amazon and they're cheap and good. I got one as my second battery for my Ryobi mower and it seems to provide more power than the Ryobi one.
I bought the P601 router bundled with the 15-piece bit set 8/31 for $69 but haven't used them yet. Is it worthwhile trying to return just the router and get this one? I've seen guys here buy battery & tool bundles and return just the tools but haven't done that myself.

Just call or text them. You can get the price adjustment over the phone
