Probably too much for a 8 year old. These are made to go far and one wrong move and you just lost $380. For a younger kid I would suggest a $100 or less drone

Similar price at Sams Club with extra battery, charging hub and spare propellers but no 32 GB micro SD card or bag.

Same deal from a few months back, same price. I purchased this bundle before summer. You can see some of the photos I've taken with it at @clarkefishing on IG.

I have this drone and I love it. It's very small, fits in your hand, and folds up nicely in the bag, and I'm normally not a "buy a bundle with bag" kind of guy. It was so small that I was able to take it on my Norwegian cruise (security didn't catch it) when their policy states that they ban drones and got incredible shots of Bermuda. It's very simple to use. Takes great photos and video. The first time I flew it was right after a tropical storm came through, like first break in the rain after, and the wind was 25+ mph, and I had no issues controlling the drone. I got a couple of "high wind warnings" when I was up 300+ feet, but it's just a temporary warning. The auto land feature is cool but I like to land manually to practice. I also got stupid one time and flew it around the side of an island with buildings between the drone and I, when it was already almost a mile away, and it lost connection… after a full minute it reconnected and it was flying right back to me (it's programmed to return to its takeoff spot if it becomes disconnected). Super cool that he came back!

A couple of cons. You will buy an extra battery pretty soon because it's so much fun that 20 minutes goes by very quickly. It's also not the biggest/best sensor, especially compared to the Mini 3, which I may be buying soon. I also went to use it one day and it wouldn't fly due to some internal (I think IMU) error. I have the extra warranty through DJI and after chatting with support, they suggested I send it back to them, and they sent me a different refurbished Mini 2.

Overall I'm very happy with it and it's a good starter photography drone that can take some great photos without taking a ton of space if you're going on a trip.

If you're not interested in taking photos or videos, just flying it, I would get a different drone or one of the DJI POV drones.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Does Costco sell the DJI Mini 2 Fly more combo or is this their version?
The DJI Mini 2 Fly More combo just went on sale everywhere for $509. I wonder if the $129 is worth the extra battery (Costco 2 vs Fly more combo - 3 + charger) and the extra propellers, etc.
From my math, it seems getting the
Costco deal + extra battery + battery hub + set of propellers total $486 before taxes as opposed as the Fly more Deal which is $509.
Anyone care to correct my math here? am I missing something?
Costco combo +
battery hub $39.00
intelligent battery $55.00
propellers & screws $12.00
total $106.00
The extra battery and triple charger hub is worth it. That's what I have and purchased separately months back.

This is their version of the Fly More combo.

Charging hub is $40 and an extra battery is $60.

You can absolutely take this when you travel. I did. I even have the triple charging bank to charge the batteries and it's also a reverse charger so you can charge your phone from USB.

I don't think there's a smaller drone with better flight software and camera system from this drone, other than the new Mini 3.

So my math is correct, the Costco bundle and getting the hub and extra battery and props separately is cheaper than the FLY MORE Combo.
The prices of extra battery $55 and hub $39 are from the DJI website.

I haven't bought a DJI drone before — these are all geofenced and height restricted, right?
Yes, certain areas you can't fly in, and there's a maximum height flight anywhere in the US (and most other countries) of 400 feet. It's really about 393 feet before it tells you to lower height, but you get the idea.

Thanks for the price breakdown! I'm a newbie and I think this Costco version with Costco card extended warranty is the way to go for me.

Notable things in the DJI Fly More combo has 3 batteries, the charging bank, and the Propeller Holder (I also bought that separate, I think they're about $10).

$55 x 2, $39, $10, comes out to $159. Plus all the extra stuff in the package.

So if you want 3 batteries versus 2, it's a tiny bit more if you bought the Costco deal and then everything separate versus buying DJI's Fly More package.

No, it's under 250 grams at only 249. So you don't need to register it with FAA. And if you're not doing any commercial work with it, you don't need 107.

per Costco page: Includes: Extra Battery, Mini Bag and 32GB MicroSD Card
the Costco bundle has 2 batteries so to match the FLY MORE Combo you have to get 1 extra $55, 1 hub $39, 1 set of propellers and screws $12
$380+ 106 = $486
Please anyone let me know if my math is wrong or I am missing something on the extras. I think I might go with Costco and get the other stuff from B&H.

I'm going on a cruise to Belize, Honduras & Mexico…
How can I find out where I can take it?
Did you bring it in your checked back or carry-on for the ship?

But you have to take your TRUST certification, which is very simple and easy and free

I have this and I watched some youtube videos vs mini 3. Surprisingly, camera in mini 2 has nicer colors and more contrasty. The features on mini 3 didn't convince me to spend extra 300 400. So mini 2 it is.

Anyone have any thoughts on cost value analysis of this vs the mini 3 pro? I had my heart set on the mini 3 pro, because of avoidance, and the camera, then I found the Autel Nano Plus which has an even better camera, is a few hundred cheaper than mini 3 pro, but lots of complaints about no active track yet (for the price) and struggling in the wind.

For $380, this seems like a steal for a drone with a good (not great camera), not avoidance or active track, but not the end of the world.
If this is your first drone and you are not sure if you are going to enjoy it then go with the mini 2. If don't mind spending $1k and or know that you won't get bored with it then go mini 3. I don't own an Autel but I've read that the software is not as polished.
