This is a great device, especially for those with kids. Not having to juggle around for keys is game changing. Once you get used to it, it becomes annoying having to go back to using a key.
I have the 3rd gen and these are my thoughts:
Pros:
1. Unlocks the door before you even get to it. For me, this is about 15 feet from the front door. I can't express how nice it is to not have to use my key. I have two kids, frequently carry groceries, takeout, bags, etc. I don't know of any other smart lock that unlocks on its own without requiring a pin, fingerprint, phone tap, fob, etc
2. Works with existing lock and doesn't show the smart lock on the outside. I have a highly rated lock that also makes it easy to reset the physical key. Not having to get rid of this lock is great. Assembly was very easy.
3. Works great with Google assistant. Part of my nighttime routine is having the door lock, has saved me quite a few trips to the first floor when someone forgets to lock the door. Also, I hate the way smart locks look so having the clean front door look is worth it.
4. Easy to setup and get started. Good guest access. Unlock and lock from anywhere via app
Cons:
1. Android can be more finicky with auto unlock, I've had to reset things on my phone a few times. Wife has an iPhone and never has had issues.
2. Auto-lock features not nearly as robust. I don't even use it, more likely will lock myself out if I do
3. Takes a lot of batteries. Battery life is good, maybe changing the batteries every 7 months or so. You get lots of notification when batteries are low. Lock is still fully functional with the physical key of battery does completely drain
4. App can be slow or unresponsive at times
I have the 3rd generation of this lock. I can't understate how useful it is. I have it set to unlock my door as soon as I'm in Bluetooth range. Having to juggle keys is a thing of the past.
Couple of things to be aware of with this lock;
1) Goes through batteries. I have to replace every 3 months
2) If you use Apple Homekit the syncing can be a bit sketchy.

If you have Android read the app reviews carefully. I have two 3rd generation pro locks and they have been garbage since I bought them. We hate this brand. Last week I bought an Eero pro 6e mesh wifi system and discovered the August connect bridge will not work with IpV6 enabled as told by customer support. Buy a Lockley. Pricier but way better. August was one of the biggest tech regrets of my life since I bought an Archos media player.

Lockly looks great except for me, the biggest downfall is no black option. Why Lockly, why?!
Ah yes perfect. And once you get close to your door, ima rob yo azz at gunpoint and go through your house. Free unlocked door
I have good news and bad news.
Bad news: I guess I will get robbed by the world's first slickdeal bandit
Good news: The likelihood you can even afford this lock let alone a gun if you have to rob me is quite low. In the end I suspect you are trying to get a good laugh from strangers due to a non-existent social life. But hey that's just my opinion.
My August lock experience was not great. And it died one week out of warranty. I replaced it with a wyze lock and the experience has been many times better.
Sooo what happens when the lock fails and locks you out? Just read the Wyze review where guy got locked out of his house and had to cut lock out of the door. Yikes.
JFI, You can get the Smart Lock Pro for the same price at the August website. It comes with the connect device. I have it and love it, can open remotely via wifi from anywhere. It is 229.99 but the $90 code still works making it 139.99

This link is for Gen 3 lock with bridge. Gen 4 uses 2 cr123s and requires no bridge, if I understand correctly. Does anyone know if I can make an Alexa skill that locks the door if I arm Ring alarm?

I've read mixed reviews and I can tell you it works fine. It's got two modes: Bluetooth and wifi so if you lose connection with one, you still got the other. Auto unlock is awesome (and it works most of the time for me). Auto lock scares me as I don't want to get locked out of my home so I don't use that feature. I've had my August lock for about 3 years now and I've only had to replace the batteries once. It's definitely better than a key and lock. I think the price is fair. Software updates are far and few in-between, and I think they could have done more in this area. There is a way you can program it (in the depths of Reddit) with a Samsung app to give you a notification when you accidently leave your door unlocked.
it's also handy to have the app to check to see if you remembered to lock your door too. also as someone mentioned you likely won't become a target for a hack as you can't see this lock from the outside.
I've always wondered about auto lock… like what if you walk out the door to dump the trash without your phone and end up chatting with your neighbor for a while… will it lock the door on you? Can it be unlocked with Apple Watch only?
Ordered the 3rd generation over the 4th generation after reading countless reviews of poor battery life on the 4th generation.
I will use it mostly for the autolock feature for the back porch door and garage door that leads to the backyard because the wife and kids often forget to lock the door when they come back inside the house.
Would be useful but constantly loses connection with mesh Wifi and thus goes through batteries like mad - and I used the energizer lithium ones. Support was useless.
Turn off Auto Unlock in the August app, add the lock to Smart Things, and use that to auto lock/unlock when coming home/leaving. It's rock solid that way (both Android and iOS).
I did this and it started unlocking my door whenever I drove past my neighborhood
I never thought about getting one of these, but there was one on the front door when I bought my house in 2020, so I figured I'd give it a shot. After 2+ years, here's my experience with the 3rd Generation Pro:
The Connect device is pretty sensitive to WiFi availability/quality. I've always used the router from my ISP because I don't really care that much about WiFi performance (everything important is hard-wired). The Connect would routinely drop and need to be power cycled, sometimes as often as once a day. I assumed it was the router because my phone would semi-frequently complain about its WiFi. Then I got an extender for a different project (Netgear EAX80), and it's been much more solid since. However, I've still had to cycle it twice in those three weeks, so it's not like it's great.
The documentation says it does not support rechargeable batteries, but I've been using AA eneloops in it for the entire two years, and it's been fine. The app will complain about them being low far before they actually are.
I charge my batteries once every two months or so, but based on how long they take to charge, I could probably go longer (usually takes less than 2 hours on a low-draw charger). But keep in mind I pretty rarely use the door the lock is on, and when I do, I normally use my key because it's faster. It probably actuates the lock once a month or so. If it got used multiple times a day, I'm sure the battery life would be affected.
I turned off the auto-unlock because I have a large-ish house and would routinely go in and out of BT range. Also, as I noted, I just don't use this door very often.
I mostly use this to check the status of the door when I'm away from the house. I have used it a couple times to let people in remotely (a friend once, a handyman once).
I've had Pixel/Android phones the entire time, and I've never had an issue with the app.
I actually ordered a 4th Gen from Amazon earlier this week for my back door, but this thread made me realize they don't use AA batteries, so I'm debating between returning it to get another 3rd Gen and getting some rechargeable CR123A batteries. I haven't purchased a non-rechargeable battery for 10+ years (except 9V for smoke alarms).
Batteries die every 4-6 weeks and need replacement. very different from my Schlage lock that can go an year+
I get messages about the August lock connecting and disconnecting from Wifi every day (multiple). These are super annoying. if it's disconnected, cannot be unlocked. if you lose power to your router for instance, lock cannot be unlocked.
I've been locked out multiple times from battery dying (yes, I know I should have replaced the battery).
This is not the worth the hassle.
Note that this does NOT have a separate connect device. And it does not use AA batteries uses. This uses CR123A batteries which are more expensive and I think smaller capacity which is why they die so quickly.
