One room I tested went from 60 Mbps without the extender down to 30 Mbps at the extender. It cut the speed in half. And of course it was even slower further away.
You can see my post as well. I love the thing, but have told my phone never to connect to it because the network switching just becomes aggravating. If you just want to extend your Wi-Fi so you can do things like run a WiFi speaker or pull up internet instructions once in awhile for car repairs on your laptop-without spending much money- it might work well for you, but no one will be able to answer that. you'll have to try.

With the extender, you are actually naming it your network name, plus an extended network name. So essentially, you have 2 different wireless networks within the house. 1 for the main wireless and the 2nd will be this extender.
Now, if you want to somewhat future proof, you will want the Wifi 6E, but those are pretty pricy. A still good alternative is the Wifi 6 system at minimum. So look on the box for WiFi 6. You will get a stronger signal and faster wireless from it as well. It better controls the output to each device and can handle more devices at once. So if you have a big family and many devices using wifi, this will handle the traffic much better. This is decent one for 3 units. Put one at the main modem, put a 2nd one about 50 feet away downstairs, and put the 3rd wherever you want. https://www.amazon.com/Mesh-Wifi-...6e4cdc8f10
The unit must be placed somewhere where you do have signal so it can connect to your router and provide access itself. If you have an outlet somewhere in your house where your coverage is good and it is not far from the garage that would be the place to try it. If you dont have wifi coverage anywhere near your garage, your house must be big and you really should look at mesh setups instead.

This is because all extenders use half the bandwidth to communicate back to the main router so it only has half the bandwidth to communicate with the clients. If you run an ethernet cable and use this as an access point, your speed won't drop.
