This is probably the best hobby-grade 1/8 scale RC you can find at this price, especially as it comes with a battery and a charger. It's a great starter car, reasonably fast and nearly indestructible. This is the cheapest I have ever seen if you sign up for the email and get the 5% off code. The Speed Buggy now also includes the Spektrum™ SLT3™ transmitter and SLR300 receiver. The transmitter is ergonomically designed for long periods of fatigue-free bashing and has a foam wheel for precise fingertip control plus an improved hand grip and trigger feel. New bashers will be able to set throttle limits at 50% or 75% until they are ready to use the full speed potential. The SLT3™ is compatible with Tactic® SLT™ receivers to run other RTR vehicles you may own, and includes a third channel to control optional features such as lights and winches on models that have them.
It also has the ingenious modular design perfected by ARRMA® engineers for easy component access and maintenance. The power module, with improved dirt management, consists of a MEGA 550 motor for rock-jumping speed, plus motor plate, slipper clutch assembly and gear cover. The power module can be detached from the chassis as a complete unit by removing just one screw. With the power module removed, the slipper clutch can be reached easily for adjustments by taking out three screws that attach the gear cover. The gear ratio can be finely tuned as the power module now uses a sliding motor mesh design.
A two-piece molding screwed to the Speed Buggy's chassis serves as its electronics module, containing a waterproof receiver box, servo mount and ESC tray. The SLR300 receiver mounts inside the receiver box for protection from dirt and moisture. The ultra-compact ESC is screwed to the top of the module, allowing quick access to the on/off switch, while the servo mounts to the side. All three components can be removed together, quickly and easily.
The differential module houses each differential unit in an innovative yoke design. Only eight screws need to be removed to release the front and rear yokes. The power module can then be detached, allowing you to pivot the gearbox cases for differential access. The TYPHON™ 4X4 MEGA RTR comes brushless-ready with 37T 1.35mod diffs with silicone O-rings. The large gears can withstand huge torque, and internal metal gears have been chosen for reliability during extreme bashing.
Its full-time 4WD transmission uses strong front, rear, and centerline telescopic driveshafts that can't be lost during heavy impacts, unlike dogbones. A simple, dependable, responsive steering assembly complements the ultra-reliable drive system and features a servo horn with built-in servo saver. Also, these sales are typically made from the parent company, Horizon Hobby. When you see these sales pop out it's a good idea to visit a local hobby store and buy there- they will have a coupon code for the sales price.
You can run 2S on this by changing the jumper on the ESC and the remote has 3 throttle settings for learners.
1. DEERC 9206E 1/10 scale @ Amazon here [amazon.com]. This is not on as great of sale right now, but I've seen it many times before with a coupon that brings the price close to $100. When I picked it up 1-2 weeks ago, the price was $75 on a special deal with the coupon. I assume the price could get low to $75-100 again. It's a great beginner drive with 4WD. I bought a 3C battery for it (you need a separate charger) that gives it an INSANE BOOST IN SPEED. Just be careful the car doesn't get too hot. I'm not worried now in the colder weather.
Price is $130 - $20 coupon for $110 right now.
2. This is one of the best pure beginning I've experienced here [amazon.com]. I bought this and don't care of my son smashes it around. Of all of the cars I've had, it seems to have the most forgiving control and build. The suspension on this guy can take a major jump and not bottom out, and there's not too much torque in it where it spins out. OK I just noticed something insane. If you click on the link and go to Black-W Battery it has a 50% off coupon, bringing it to like $27.50. This will definitely hit front page.

This is not to poop at all on the current deal. I'm just giving options to those who don't know much about cars, but want a quality car to learn on. All jokes aside, the cars above are fun. They're not slow and they're forgiving with a couple of crashes as well as jumps.
Car #1's 4WD does ride really well even on grass (and allows for a battery upgrade to give a nice speed boost).

I am worried the scale (1/16) will mean it is pretty small for repairs/mods
To me, a starter RC that doesn't suck at all for $33 is a steal.
Let em smash it up all he wants... he's just learning. Also, I know from experience that this car can take jumps no problem. I have other ones that from 2-3ft high you'll hear it bottom out. This guy doesn't, even at that height.
I did replace the rear tires with slightly bigger ones. That helps a ton with being able to also drive on grass, but not mandatory.
