As tempting as this is .. I swore off REI backpacks. Reason? One year warranty. Mine ripped at the seams after 2+ years of light duty use (design flaw they've since re-vamped). They told me to pack sand. Actually they told me they'd offer 20% off a new one. Compare this to Osprey, whose warranty is anything, anytime, any reason. Make mine an Osprey.

You pay $35 for a comparable Osprey bag?

Well this is comparable to Osprey Daylite which was $37.95 recently and still available https://slickdeals.net/f/16222438-osprey-daylite-pack-rei-grey-charcoal-w-purple-trim-only-37-93?src=rcm_category_h

Have to agree, REI went from one of my favorite places to buy gear decades ago to my "last resort" store. I get they had some return churn, but they went completely in the other direction to where their return policy is near worthless.

There are so many other places that make backpacks and other gear and warranty it "forever." If I'm buying a tool to protect me and my trip then it damn well have an ample warranty which tells me the manufacturer built it to last a long time.

Yeah they could have at least kept the lifetime for their in house branded items and changed to 1 year for other brands.

Is this REI better than EB 29L? With $10 EB coupon difference is only $5

Not sure I'd compare a 13L bag to a 22L bag.

this type of opening really sucks for small bags. would recommend zipper opening for easier access at the bottom.

I used to teach at REI. I asked them about the warranty stuff one time. They basically said people abused the absolute shit out of the return policy in stores. People would buy 150 dollar shoes, take them on a 10 day backpacking trip, tear them up, get them all muddy, etc and then return them when they got back from the trip. Same thing with packs, trekking poles, etc. Basically "renting" equipment for free.

Sucks for the rest of us when that happens but people are shitty so here we are.

I've brought this to work every day for a year and it's light enough and just big enough that it's also been my go-to summer day hike bag. I probably put 100 miles on it this past summer and it's not really showing signs of wear yet.

This is a nice lightweight day pack. It's basically a semi-rigid stuff sack with some extra compartments and straps. If you need something in-between a sturdier day pack, and a foldable backpack for traveling, this is a good option.

I prefer this over my Osprey Daylite for these reasons:

* The water bottle holders don't drop my bottles, and actually expand outward, rather than eat into the interior space.
* Is a little larger
* Packs a little better in my Farpoint 40L when traveling. On the other hand, it's less rigid than the Daylite.
* The lidded design lets me drape a jacket underneath the lid if I need to.

Some downsides are:

* The two clips for holding the lid down fall to the floor when they're undone. It can be annoying to have to always have to reach for them to clip them back in. I ended up putting them through the gear tie out loops so that it doesn't flop down as far.
* Waist belt isn't removable, though there is a little "pocket" of space you can tuck them in so they're out of the way.

For those comments about the REI warranty,
I still see a lot of used/returned gear at my local REI store.

Support your brick and mortar businesses! Otherwise you'll only have category killer Amazon to buy from. REI is an awesome resource for trying out gear.

I have this bag and love it. Use it all the time. I've traveled the world with it. When I lost one, I bought another (at full price). Tempted to grab another at this price. It's really well made and just the right size. I use it out and about for the day and on day hikes. Carries enough stuff without being too large. It's super light-weight but also well made and stands up to abuse. Certainly recommend it to anyone.

Edit: Interesting, looks like they now went to a dual-clip closure on the lid. Mine has a single. They've redesigned this pack at least once previously too, as my current one is a little different than the one I originally got back in 2017. Still love it.

Would this work as a "personal item" you think on a plane?
It does. I have this pack and frequently throw it under the seat in front of me. Just did on flights from the US to Iceland, then to Denmark and back. It's more than within the dimensions required, even when fully-loaded.
