The 2nd gen Echo Dots are still useful for connecting up to stereo systems via an aux cord (3.5mm), especially with the latest generation not having any wired audio out.

Does your current thermostat need batteries? If it doesn't use batteries, then you have a c wire already running to it.

If they are still accepting these for 25% off trade in, they are good to have one around for that as well. I have one in the game room upstairs and it still hears me better than a 1st gen show 8 or 3rd gen echo that is 10-15ft away.

The dot is worth it at that price just to use for a trade-in discount on another Echo device. I already have a couple dots I don't use anymore, otherwise I'd get one of these.

If not, you can always use an adapter that plugs into any wall outlet.
