I have been researching higher quality Zwilling/Henckels knives (not the cheaper versions of which there are a lot). Several stores, including Macy's just dropped prices on this 8 piece 4 Star block set, which was just $249.99 everywhere on Black Friday. The Four Star appear to be very good quality, and I just ordered a set. I realize that I can get lots of cheaper knives for less money, but I am looking for quality over quantity. These are Zwilling double twin (not single twin for those who know the difference) forged, and made in Germany. I am posting to the Macy's link, but it is currently also available at the other stores below for the same price. With some cashback programs, this could be a very good deal.
Not bad knives, but the $700+ price is just bait. In reality these sold around $300.
So still a good deal but not amazing. Most people don't take care of or really appreciate good kitchen knives, but a good rule of thumb is, if the company won't tell you what the steel is (VG10, ATS34 etc. etc.) they are using at best just okay steel. Better than a set of $50 knives......sure, but if you see "special stainless steel formula" etc. it's not great steel.
Most folks really only need 2-3 knives, the mistake many make is buying into big sets and only using half of them. You can look at something like a Tojiro DP series that's VG10 steel, spend a bit more and have blades that will perform better.
Amazon original price $299.99 is much more reasonable than $734.50?
Bought these over a decade ago from Macy's. Still going strong. Highly recommend

Seems like a great price. I just paid $130 for a 5 piece Victorinox setnin hopes to get higher quality essential knives. Debating seeing if I could return it and get these as these appear to be german-made and not Chinese.
Love this set. Bought it at BBB for P2 some years ago, and they've held up really well. If I could get this again with a further 20% discount, I'd be tempted to get a second set for when we're both in the kitchen.
I've had the set for years after seeing them on clearance somewhere. Quality is there, but the prep knife and serrated utility knife are filler, at least for my uses. I never really bonded with the chef knife, either. I'm sure it's the perfect set for somebody, but at this price I personally would just look for a couple knives you absolutely love.

Thanks. I have just started getting into researching knives, and I have yet to go down the rabbit hole of good Japanese knives. I am trying to protect my wallet! But the Tojiro knives look pretty neat. I will look at them further.

Thanks. This a gift for my mother-in-law, and I think she will appreciate more knives (even if they are filler), but I still want her to have some quality. I am now thinking about upgrading my own knives as well. I have had the same idea about picking up a couple "really good" knives, but it opens a Pandora's box of what those knives might be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best knives I've ever used

When it comes to price, I'm surprised these knives are allowed to exist. I have some family members in the culinary business, so I've gotten to use so fairly fancy knives over the years. I'm not saying these are on the same level of some $100+ knife, but for how much you are paying you'll fall in love. I think Adam Ragusea said the best knife is the knife you reach for - these are the knives I go for every time.
